Why the CyHawk basketball game is played on a Thursday?

Ten years ago it seems like this game was on a Friday. Twenty years ago it was on a Saturday the same night as the Heisman trophy presentation. Why has it moved over the years? It does seem to get lost now. I think at one time the University of Iowa complained that being on the weekend didn't allow their student athletes time to study for finals. But now I see the hawks had a game yesterday(Sunday). What gives?

i have 0 knowledge of anything but playing iowa state on a weekend vs playing new orleans is probably much, much less stress.

Same for Iowa State.

I’m pretty sure that when it originally moved away from Saturday, it was because Iowa had a rule that there could be no athletic events the week of finals.

Obviously, that rule no longer exists.

I would say it’s because Iowa was hoping that HS basketball games and wrestling meets would pull down the viewership and the hawks would have as many people see them lose.

2007 was the last season that the game was played on a Saturday. I believe it originally moved for TV. At that time the CyHawk game was usually still just a local media broadcast. They switched the game to Friday's in an effort to take advantage of less inventory.

I think Iowa BOR allows teams to host home events the weekend going into finals but I still don't think they are allowed to have any events during finals week.

If Iowa is playing a lower-tier team can it really be called an "Athletic" Event?

If only college sports prioritized the fans, wouldn't that be great?

Of course this should be a weekend game - have some fun with your friends/rivals, or travel to the game and make a day of it.

Who wants to drive to iowa city in the middle of winter on a thursday night??

I can't remember the details of the transition of Saturday-to-Friday-to-Thursday, but I kinda like it on Thursday night (speaking as a TV viewer ... I might feel differently as local attendeed). Typically, there isn't much other "media attention" for major-conference MBB games.

When it was in the Friday night slot, wasn't there some discussion that it conflicts w/ HS basketball schedule, so perceived as not the most ideal placement?

Also occasionally was played in January, but that has occurred only 3 times I think since 1980, most recently in 2004 (not counting the f***** NIT game in '03).

If we go WAY back early in the series, it was played in February or March the majority of the time.

Most of us weren't alive then. Even me. :)

I recall when it got moved to Thursday it was so ESPN would broadcast it, presumably due to low inventory on Thursday. My guess is that it has just stuck since.

That 2004 game was the John Neal game and I'm pretty sure it was like a Wednesday night in January (as you mentioned).

Yeah I've seen a few times when it was in January and can't remember why especially in 2004.
