Cy-Hawk win jolts ISU into legitimate Big 12 contender

I think it's a very fair statement. They talked about the Vegas odds, and Iowa State jumped a few teams in terms of odds to win the Big 12 Championship after the win.

I hadn’t thought much about the clock operation on the last kick off but it felt long. I just chalked it up to my decades of cyclone fan kicked in the nuts experience making time stretch. But I went back and click the stop watch a bunch of times between catch and clock moving to 5. Trying to be as honest as I could, and while I’d always expect some home town clock operator advantage, it was pretty outrageous. Even giving credit for the clock having to run a full second before it moves to five There 0.5+ of lag there. Good thing it didn’t matter.

Another thing to consider: On the game winning field goal, that play started with 9 seconds on the clock and ended with 6 seconds on the clock. They're trying to tell us that a 54 yard field goal took 3 seconds off the clock?

Add in that Kinnick is tough to win in - there is no denying that this was a big win. We all know Iowa isn't elite since they get their ass kicked by Top 10 teams but they still win 8-10 games per year and any time Iowa State wins on the road vs. a ranked team, especially a Big 10 team, its a very good win.

Kansas couldn't beat Illinois on the road. K-State needed a controversial call to beat Tulane on the road. These wins don't grow on trees.
Didn't know it was at Tulane. Hats off to KSU for doing that, they should probably never do it again.

Now go back and look at the clock on the field goal. I'm pretty sure ball was already in the air before it began to run.

Iowa has an elite defense. I don't know how you can argue otherwise. They returned a ton of production from a Top 5 defense in college football last year.

Now their offense-- still horrible. I do think they'll wind up better than last year's offense, but that's an extremely low bar to clear.

That win will look great by the end of the year. Iowa will wind up where they always do, largely by virtue of their schedule. They'll be in the 8-9 win, upper teens ranking area.

If Iowa wins fewer than 9 games with their schedule this season will be a total bust.

Seriously, Iowa putting up 19 against this ISU defense is probably a sign that their offense is dramatically better than years past.

Their offense sucks. And it is quite a bit better than it was last year.

I think it's pretty clear their o-line is much better than last year but they have no receivers. If they can run the ball they are still screwed. They caught us off guard early by being pass first but once the scripted plays were done their offense was nothing other than a couple big runs. Kudo's to our staff for making adjustments though.

Contender? At this point every team in the conference can make that claim. I think the biggest takeaway from the Iowa game is Iowa isn’t that good. Their passing game is a dumpster fire.
Iowa is probably a 10-2, 9-3 P4 team, and while they may not be as good as their record, they're at least as good as last year's team that was in the Big Ten championship. By that definition, there are very few good teams in all of college football.

It's wild, if you watch the replay it looks like they started the clock after he kicked it and stopped it before it was even through the uprights. I honestly don't know the rule on when the time is supposed to stop on field goals but half of the time it seems like it doesn't stop for 3 or 4 seconds after it goes through.

The out of bounds (back of endzone for FGs) is when it stops.

Don’t forget, the refs adjusted time up to 40 seconds right before they had to punt. Clock had gone to 0:38. Boo birds when they announced that. Who’s to say something malicious wasn’t happening with the clock operation….

I find it hard to believe in 9 seconds we had all of:
- 54 yard field goal
- 25 yard return
- then one play

Clickbait!

Two years ago ISU beat Iowa by 3 in Iowa City. Iowa's defense was just as "elite" then as it was Saturday. No one was talking contender then. And the season after that game was one to forget.................if I remember.

Having 2 goal line stands won the game. If just one of those is a TD..............no one here is talking "jolts' or big 12 "contender". I can see having both OU and UT out of the picture does make it easier to think it could happen however.

I'm no totally sold on Iowa I don't care how many they returned on defense. The only reason people were thinking playoffs was because of their Charmin soft schedule.........as usual.

We will see.

It's a solid win, not sure what to think of Iowa's offense, their defense was really good as always.

Mostly I just have some optimism seeing a Campbell team get off to a good start.

Include the 2pt conversion there. Different ball game if they convert there.

Sure, but let's then include our missed FG. The bottom line is our red-zone defense was awesome. No other way to say it.
Agree whole heartedly. The D answered the bell. I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen us push Iowa back like that. Dom, TO, JR, and others were monsters in there.

Pretty damning. But probably happens everywhere. You also can't no for sure how accurate the score bug clock is compared to the official referee clock

99% of the time, the bug is either taking a direct data feed from the stadium scoreboard or shooting the clock display. At most, it's a half-second delay.
