Iowa has an elite defense. I don't know how you can argue otherwise. They returned a ton of production from a Top 5 defense in college football last year.

Now their offense-- still horrible. I do think they'll wind up better than last year's offense, but that's an extremely low bar to clear.

That win will look great by the end of the year. Iowa will wind up where they always do, largely by virtue of their schedule. They'll be in the 8-9 win, upper teens ranking area.
Well we gashed Iowa's "elite" defense for 200+ yards passing and 20 points in one half, so either they aren't that elite or our offense is. I'm afraid it's more the former than the latter.

Clickbait!

Two years ago ISU beat Iowa by 3 in Iowa City. Iowa's defense was just as "elite" then as it was Saturday. No one was talking contender then. And the season after that game was one to forget.................if I remember.

I mean, after we beat Iowa in 2022 there absolutely was a lot of hype. It didn't pan out, but the hype was there. Was there less hype about being a 'contender'? Maybe. But we also had #6 Oklahoma and #8 OSU at that point in the season. Not to mention Baylor (preseason conference champion pick) and Texas.

Having 2 goal line stands won the game. If just one of those is a TD..............no one here is talking "jolts' or big 12 "contender".

You can do that for any game though. Most games between high level competition you can say "if they'd made or missed one or two plays here or there, you have a different result". Especially so for campbell teams.

Listening to 2GNC right now. Hassel says in last 5 years Iowa has only won 3 games (3-10) against teams that have won 8 games or more in a season. Those were against 8 win Purdue and Minny. They are 0fer against 9+ win teams. That is the definition of feasting on weak schedules.

Nice to hear him say it publicly. Plenty of hawk fans refuse to acknowledge that.

The 10 is actually more astonishing than the 3...10 teams...TOTAL...in five years?!?!

I hadn’t thought much about the clock operation on the last kick off but it felt long. I just chalked it up to my decades of cyclone fan kicked in the nuts experience making time stretch. But I went back and click the stop watch a bunch of times between catch and clock moving to 5. Trying to be as honest as I could, and while I’d always expect some home town clock operator advantage, it was pretty outrageous. Even giving credit for the clock having to run a full second before it moves to five There 0.5+ of lag there. Good thing it didn’t matter.
I went back and put a watch on it as well. Keep in mind that it is a full 6 seconds since they asked the clock operator to set it at 6. I timed it twice and got :05.77 one time and :06.00 the second. I thought I got started just a hair early on the second one, so I think it was pretty accurate to say that there were parts of a second left for a last play from scrimmage. Keep in mind that the clock starts when the return team touches it, not on the kick.

I can't speak to the FG play but I agree that :03 is pretty quick for a 50+ yarder. Generally in the NFL they will run the clock down to :04 for a time expiring attempt and with that time there is never time left for another play even after shorter kicks. I'll try timing that one as well. :03 seems really quick for a snap, hold, kick and through the uprights 55+ yards away (further than 54 due to the angle).

EDIT: I just timed it by online video rather than my DVR. I got :04.11 and :4.29. Yeah, they shouldn't have put another second on the clock after the made FG.

I’d be curious what our record in these type of games is too

I thought the adjustments that the offense made were masterful. They kept playing into Iowa's hands with the short game and then suddenly burned them over the top with the 75 yard pitch and catch. The adjustments to the run game and the way they were blocking it were great. Still not getting big chunks but certainly enough so the offense didn't have to become one dimensional.

The two play sequence on the winning FG drive was great. They passed that quick 10 yard out then came right back the next play with a similar look. Castro had pick 6 in his eyes there and they baited him into biting on that and then burned him where he should be. That is a seasoned play caller sequence, not a guy calling his second ever game.

Point taken, but half off that came on 2 long plays. They also weren't assisted much by their offense and found themselves on the filed a ton. That's going to create more yardage.

I guess I don't see the value in ******** on Iowa after we beat them. It's kind of weird.

The best part of the win is that Iowa is pretty much screwed. They must beat Ohio State now to have any real chance at the playoff. The rest of their schedule is pretty weak.

Here's the 'contenders'.

Honestly, I could believe anyone except KU and AZ. So that's 5 teams with a legit shot, imho, including the Clones.

TCU is also at +1600.

I think that Castro and Schulte are really good players in the back end of iowa’s defense. But they aren’t better at their positions than Noel and Higgins are receivers. ISU has two truly elite receivers that Rocco should be able to get the ball to whenever he wants.

Hassel was wrong, Iowa is 4-10 against "decent" 8+ win teams. Iowa State is 4-16 in that time.
(I went to 7+ wins for the shortened 2020 season).

Wins in bold italics (reg season record : record against 8W+ teams)

Iowa State
2023 (7-5) : 2-4 (Iowa-10W, OK St-9W, OK-10W, KU-8W, Tx-11W, K St-8W)
2022 (4-8) : 0-3 (K St-9W, Tx-8W, TCU-12W)
2021 (7-5) : 1-3 (Iowa-10W, Baylor-10W, OK St-11W, OK-10W)
2020 (8-2) : 1-1 (OK-7W, OK St-7W)
2019 (7-5) : 0-5 (Iowa-9W, Baylor-11W, OK St-8W, OK-11W, K St-8W)

Iowa
2023 (10-2) : 0-2 (Penn St-10W, Mich-12W)
2022 (7-5) : 2-3 (Illini-8W, Mich-12W, OSU-11W, Purdue-8W, Minn-8W)
2021 (10-2) : 1-2 (Purdue-8W, Wisc-8W, Minn-8W)
2020 (6-2) : 0-0
2019 (9-3) : 1-3 (Mich-9W, Penn St-10W, Wisc-10W, Minn-10W)

Iowa is 1-7 against 9W+ teams, Iowa State is 2-10 against 9W+ teams.
Iowa is 1-6 against 10W+ teams, Iowa State is 1-9 against 10W+ teams.
Iowa is 0-3 against 11W+ teams, Iowa State is 1-4 against 11W+ teams.

One thing I didn't realize until digging into past seasons: OK St has not missed a Bowl game since 2005.

I hear you, but I hate that "if you don't count our two long runs" kind of stuff. If you don't count my friend's three F's, he's almost on the honor roll.

Contender? At this point every team in the conference can make that claim. I think the biggest takeaway from the Iowa game is Iowa isn’t that good. Their passing game is a dumpster fire.
They’re the same team they’ve been for 5 years
