Stars matter. Example, Notre Dame. Bigger and badder at every position on the field than we were. Plus those kids are mentally tough. It showed. Please save the “look at Mike Rose” sayings. That’s one guy, I get that. I’m not bashing at all because Campbell is literally the best thing that has ever happened to Iowa State Football. I’m just not impressed with the class is all I’m saying.
Look at Brock Purdy then. Or Tarique Milton. Or Anthony Johnson. Or Tayvonn Kyle. Or Datrone Young. Or Zach Petersen. Or Jake Hummel. Or BREECE FREAKING HALL...

I'm leaving out a lot of dudes, but all were two stars or unranked when they committed.

No one is saying taking less talented kids just because they are from Iowa. I am saying you get the best talent from the state to come here.

Is not their job therefore to walk into the house of a lifelong Iowa fan, and get him to see it is his best interests to come to ISU and play football? Difficult without a doubt, but not impossible. This staff has been here 4 years now, they should know the HS coaches, be out visiting the instate schools regularly and getting a line on the next great players here in the state, and then get on them early and stay on them.

If you want to win in college football you have to get the best instate talent, its that simple, you can have recruiting pipelines from all the states you want, but how many of them are for the top kids from that state? Few if any, hell Chizic tried the path of ignoring recruiting Iowa kids, I remember the coaches of WDM Valley say that he nor no one from his staff had ever been to the school. He thought a 3 star from Texas was a better than a 3 star from Iowa, they might be, but why not try and get both?
If they could get the best talent from Iowa, they would.

However, there is no point in going to Griffin Liddle's house EVER when he told you on the phone he's not interested. (He may not directly say it, but recruiters can tell when a kid is interested or not).

But its a cop out to say if they could they would, that is their job to get the best in state players to play for ISU. It's like me telling my boss, "I could do better, but I just don't."

Sure a kid like Liddle may not be interested, and you move on, but how about the rest of the Iowa instate kids, were they all "not interested?"

Its really simple if you want to be a great program, you do it by getting the best instate players, then add to your needs with out of state ones. Talent is king, and we are losing a lot of instate talent to Iowa. Its not a one or two year thing, its been going on for decades.

This is such a strange hill to die on, carry on I guess.

If Campbell were coming off an 11 win season, it might be.

ISU currently has the 21st ranked 2021 class, 3rd in Big 12. Yeah, it will change but lets not act like we are pulling in a horrible class so far.
I am not acting like it’s a horrible class... I am acting like I wish it was, if not as good as MN, then a lot closer than it is. They already have 3 4* players. And personally I believe, most of the time, stars matter as they correlate closely with good offers.

Bud. Don't die on this hill. You wouldn't care about landing Jeff Bowie if he lived in Colorado.

Our best QB in school history was unranked after his senior year

Don't die on the hill, "we are just little ol Iowa State," therefore this is as good as we can do.

You are correct, I could care less about a kid from Colorado, but a kid from Iowa, that is totally different.

Here is a list of the top ranked Iowa football players from 247 recruiting. Top 5 players from the state of Iowa, we have signed or got a commit from 4 of those kids, Iowa has signed or got a commit from 13. If you cannot win your state in recruiting is hard to be a top 25 program.

What I am saying is we are not getting those kids to sign with ISU. I am not blaming Campbell, but if we want to move ahead of them we need to get those kids playing for us and not against us.
Yes, the better talent for years has been produced in the eastern side of the state, for as large as the Des Moines metro is, how many football players have we signed out there? The Allen Lazard's have been few and far between.

Not sure you're quite grokking the overall objection to your stance.

I'll simplify: the state of Iowa is not a hotbed of D1 talent.

Do not lose sleep over whether or not year-after-year ISU ropes in the state's #1 ranked recruit - ranks 1 through 5 in Iowa are generally about the same level of talent and expectation for the next level. Iowa State does get commitments from that top 5 range of recruits year after year.

The only real concern is whether Campbell has good relationships in Iowa (he does) and he can get the talent in-state that fits a current need (he does). If he started perennially losing legacy recruits in the state and recruits with personal connections to the staff, then I'd be (just barely) concerned.

If you simply want the top in-state recruit every year for posterity sake, well, that will probably take beating Iowa again in our head-to-head (which also isn't that meaningful in the grand scheme - though bragging rights are super fun).

I just did a quick scan of Oregon and Oregon States rosters. The Ducks have only 13 natives on their roster. OSU has 20. Which school has been better the last 20 years?

I agree with you. You could care less.

You are correct, I could care less if the kid was from Colorado, but he was not, now was he.

That makes all the difference in the world. So it does not bother you that ISU has only signed 4 of the top 5 in the state over the past 7 seasons, and Iowa has signed 13 of the them?

So Iowa does not have a lot of instate talent, well no kidding, and we are aren't getting a lot of what is here. The numbers point that out.

We are not charging up San Juan hill here, so there is nothing to die over. Just pointing out, we are getting our ass kicked on the instate recruiting trail, I for one would like to see that change.

You are confusing quantity with quality. How many of the top 5 from Oregon did each school get, that is what is important, not the total.

And how did this thread about an exciting young prospect go so far off the rails? Kid has a great story and put up incredible numbers. Reminds me of JJ Moses or Jarvis West. I will say that 5'8" he is listed at is a real stretch though!
