They really need to trade up this draft for Maye or McCarthy. Justin Jefferson isn’t going to wait around forever for the organization to make moves. He’s probably waiting to see what happens on draft day 1 to sign his massive contract.

What if JJ hates Maye and McCarthy and is in love with Bo Nix and Spencer Rattler.

I think its assumed he'd love Jayden Daniels, but is there info out there about how he feels about Maye and McCarthy?

The ranking in their draft class is meaningless. If it did, you'd consider Jeff Lewis a similar QB prospect to Ben Roethlisberger.

Ponder was the 4th QB picked, but there was really only 1 high end QB in that draft. Cam Newton. Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert weren't blowing people away. The next QBs taken were Andy Dalton and Kaepernick in Rd 2.

The consensus in this draft is that there is a LOT of QB depth. Just because he might be the fifth best prospect QB doesn't mean he'd be the fifth best QB in each draft.

Now, most analysts thing there is a drop after the Top 4, so you might be right on Penix at 11 as a reach. But I think he is better than that. Its also not just a decision of Penix versus McCarthy or Maye. It's Penix+23rd pick+first rounder next year. You'd better be damn sure McCarthy or Maye is head and shoulders ahead of Penix before making that trade.

And maybe if you don't love Maye or McCarthy enough to move up, you just risk that the drop to 11th. Or risk that Penix drops to 23rd. See how the QB market plays out. If the Bronco's move up for a QB, maybe you can trade down from 11 and get more draft capital.

That said, if they trade away the farm to move up, I'll hope on the hype train for whatever QB they get. Even if he's a bust, I'd rather get excited until he's proven a bust than be miserable assuming he will be a bust.

I don't know that draft rankings are meaningless, it really depends on the criteria used for them and who's doing them.

Problem is there are intangibles that play a big factor, especially for QBs. Take Ponder for instance, he had a legit photographic memory which is what wow'd the Vikings. But his processing speed was horrible which is why during games he couldn't make decisions quickly...or even good decisions :)

I'm with you on the Maye and McCarthy vs Penix thing. If they don't consider M&M way better prospects than Penix, don't trade up.

I loved Penix in that semifinal game and came away hoping the Vikings could get him later in the draft because he wasn't being talked about as a 1st rounder. But man did he look bad against Michigan and then with his injury history I kind of soured on him. But there's no doubt he's got the arm talent.

All of these QBs have their pros and cons. Good news is it sounds like KOC is really testing them when they visit. Seeing how they react off-schedule. Giving them plays in meetings and then going to the field and changing up the plays or giving them wrong plays and see how they react. Putting them in bad situations on the field and seeing how they process and react. So hopefully it pays off.

And I'm with you, I'll be on the hype train. I trust KOC enough after what he did with Dobbs and Mullins last year to think he can work with whoever they draft.

IMO the Vikings should not trade up. Very rarely does that work out. Take the QB available that is best at 11. I actually like Penix a lot. He even won at Indiana. Hasn’t been injured the last two years. And doesn’t get sacked. Plus that bazooka of an arm with the receivers he would have. Then take Newton of Illinois at DT at 23. And you still have 2025 First yet.

This Vikings brain trust passed on Brock Purdy ten times in the 2022 NFL draft.

Ten times.

Couldn't bother to take a flyer on a 4 year starter from 3 hours south.

I wouldn't trust them to get anything right.

Every single team passed on Purdy multiple times. No one outside of Ames Iowa could have predicted his ascension, even the team that ended up drafting him. Passing on Purdy isn't a valid measuring stick for any team's draft.

From what I've seen, there was a very good chance Purdy would have signed with Minnesota as an undrafted free agent. Vikings were definitely interested, San Fran just made a literal last second decision to draft Brock instead. Can't fault Minnesota here when every single team passed on Brock multiple times (49ers included)

Yeah, that would be like taking the data point a mile away from all of the rest that are in a box and saying it's a significant factor in the results. There will always be outliers in both direction. It seems like there are as many 1st round QB busts as there are 2nd-3rd round.

Did anyone hear anything about the NFL investigating tampering charges against Atlanta? I just heard about it today

https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/n...-potential-tampering-in-kirk-cousins-signing/
I get that there have to be rules in place, but contacting a player (be it pro or college) within a certain window has to be one the most-often-abused-and-hard-to-enforce rules out there. I honestly think it happens so often that the only people that get caught are ones that talk about it too casually and bust themselves (Cousins, Proctor)

Falcons passed on Purdy 8 times and now are locked in on paying a QB $180M over the next four years, a veteran QB who happens to be past his prime and may not even be in the league in four years. Seems to me their front office made some really poor decisions, much more than the Vikings

Agree.

Vikings should be thrilled they paid Cousins, at least the fans.

Still shortsighted not to throw one of those many picks at a QB.

No guarantee he has same success in Minny as in SF, but it would have been fun to watch.

Not only did they throw a pick at one, they played and started him last season. Didn't work.

Purdy draft takes are pure hindsight and nothing else. On top that, he happened to get drafted into nearly the best QB situation in entire league.
