Still looking for the origin date.

"A parody of "The Christmas Song" by Bob Wells and Mel Torme. Original parody lyrics by David Rakowski. Additional lyrics and vocal performance by Dave Swenson. Message me for a pdf of the leadsheet. FYI, the notation is in C major, but I transposed the accompaniment track to Bb to better suit my vocal range."

Found a post with the author info dating from Dec 2015, but not a definitive answer.

Side note (hah) : Rakowski has won the Pulitzer for music twice.

My head canon is that Elf on the Shelf is a government psy-op to get children more comfortable with a lifetime of surveillance.

(Clearly a joke, but maybe not?)
