The lesser known O’hare that’s in Des Moines.
Sorry read that wrong...thought the flight was to O'Hare. Going to guess if he's asking, he doesn't have pre-check. O'Hare is not too terribly busy in the morning, so I think you would be fine getting there 90 minutes early.

I'd probably say 4:00 as well. Depending on the airline and getting through security, Des Moines has been slow for me a time or two.

If you need anything from the ticket counter, check what time they open. Probably not a problem at Ohare. But I’ve gotten to the DSM airport before they opened before.

4:00 to not have to rush in the airport

I think this is the right answer, especially if you’re don’t have TSA-Pre. Walk through the door at 4am, hopefully done with security by 4:30 and then sit on your thumbs for a half hour or so before boarding starts, glad that things didn’t go sideways. Alternately, sprint up to the gate at 5:20 right before they close the doors, glad that you built in enough time for whatever went wrong.

It’s been a while, but my experience at O’Hare is that NOTHING is open that early, so be prepared for no food for coffee.

Depends on whether you have TSA Pre-Check and/or premium status with an airline royalty program. If you have United's Global Service status, you can get dropped off on the far end of Terminal 1, and you will be past security in less than 10 minutes. If you don't have any of the perks, I would try to be in the terminal 90 minutes before my flight.
