Interesting story at Arrowhead Pride and on Alex Smith and a 4 year old quote from Steve Young. Can probably apply to Richardson as well.

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2015/...e-seems-relevant-to-todays-kansas-city-chiefs

"I learned a lot from watching Brett Favre play. He was nuts. I would make the reads, drop the ball off, kick a field goal - thought I did my job. That's not your job. Your job is to create something, be "the artist" like these guys talk about, be the artist and create something to get the ball in the end zone, not read the play, see that he's covered, drop the ball down and kick a field goal. That's not the job. That's doing what you're told, but that's not...first of all you're not going to win, and second of all you're going to lose your job.
"So I learned very quickly that you had to figure out a way to create those touchdowns, and they are not easy. You say to me, "How do we get going?" Well, two things are really going to be a problem at some point if we don't get them fixed, is third down conversions. We've kind of gotten away with murder trying to win football games with two of thirteen, four of fifteen. That's not winning football. And when you don't score touchdowns, I have always said, and I learned this from hard experience - every time you kick a field goal you're closer to losing. You're that one step closer to losing. That's not always the case, but it's a general way to look at kicking field goals. To me, Alex has got to, that's his next point of development, is to be able to figure out ways to create touchdowns, and not just "doing the job." He's very competent doing those jobs, but we're kicking to many field goals, so he's got to - that means going out in the backyard with all the receivers and figuring out ways to create some space.
"But at some point you're going to take some risks of throwing some interceptions, and I can understand why Alex Smith would be afraid of that, because you start throwing interceptions with this defense and the history he has in this town, that's not good. So I could understand why he wants to be efficient."

He was pretty good in 2011 and was one muffed punt away from the Super Bowl. Frank Gore was a beast for that team and so was Vernon Davis.

Let's see what SBR can do with what appears to be an improving O line and emerging running game. I would be happy with a "game manager" if we can find a way to average 30+ points for the rest of the year.

I wish SR was 1/4 as good as Alex Smith was in college.

Yaaaa.. I think Sam has an outside shot at being a #1 draft pick like Smith.

"You have to take more chances to score touchdowns."

-Steve Young, hall of fame quarterback that had the greatest wide reciever ever and one of the best wide recievers of the last 20 years to throw to in his career

Play Lanning....what good does it do us to play Sam the rest of the way?
ive basically seen enough of sam, i would rather him finish the year. putting lanning out there so he can go into next year as damaged goods (facing ou, baylor, tcu)?

let him and grant battle for next year.

There is always that "Gamer" factor that does come into play sometimes. As coaches, in practice you see a guy make all the right reads compared maybe to another guy who doesn't seem to have it all down yet. But, put them in a game situation and something clicks.

It's the one thing about Iowa State I always worry about. We are already down in talent compared to most of the conference, so how can you get a good judge of a player when they are going against the scout team. Teams like Texas and OU's scout teams probably have at least as much talent, if not more, than we do on our starting roster. So there is something to be said for taking a look at a guy in game situations.

That being said, one thing this staff has proven is that they really don't know how to recruit or develop game changing QBs. Hell, for the most part, the best games our QBs have, are usually their first start. After that, it all seems to go downhill. Maybe our coaches teach too strongly "Follow the system" Maybe not so much this year, but for sure, the last few, if you go out and make a mistake, you get benched. Pretty tough to try and open up the game with that floating over your head.

Both seem to be more the "game manager" vs game changer.
Ok. Alex Smith is a game manager at the NFL level. Sam Richardson is a game manager at the college level, with one conference win to his name. Give me a break guys....

Yes Sam R plays for us like Alex does for the Chiefs. You see that both offenses suck. Again point being is that long sustained drives dont equal points. Big Plays Equal Points, and both of these guys do not make them happen often enough to be successful against their many opponents that do.
