Wasn't there also talk about putting a university in the eastern part of the state?

There was, but it was decided it wasnt needed as Illinois already had a satellite campus in the area.

In terms of local politics, and synergies, the two are no closer together than they were 150 years ago.

Ames and Iowa State work together on a lot of things (i.e. the Research Park, Campustown redevelopment, promoting Ames as a place to live for professors and others who work at the University, and many other things). Ames would just be another small town without Iowa State

Probably not. Story County has been around since 1846, and most of the county seats in Iowa were placed in the middle of the county so that you could easily go to the courthouse and back in a days time by horse.

Nevada wasn't founded until 1853 so what was the county seat for those seven years? I've heard that Nevada/Iowa State/Ames/County Seat story many times from many people
