"With an uninsured rate of only 4.5 percent, Ames residents are more likely to receive preventative medical care. The study also found that only 6.4 percent of Ames residents reported fair or poor health, compared to 11.2 percent of Iowans and 16 percent of all Americans. While 20 percent of Americans are smokers, only 11 percent of Ames residents identified as smokers. Other positive numbers for Ames included a lower-than-average obesity rate, unemployment rate and food-insecure population."

Sounds about right. Pretty sure I saw more obese people in a KSU mask video than in the entire city of Ames.

Yes, some of those Ames girls are certainly "healthy".

I'm surprised that 20% of Americans are smokers.

Working with people in the construction/labor intensive job sector I am not surprised at all. I inspect roadway projects and 90% of the workers pound heaters for 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week!

Yeah, I call BS. I don't believe any city in Iowa would qualify near the top of any real "healthy" cities list.

Recruiting tool. LOL.

That's what I was thinking considering students don't even count as actual residents (or do they now?), and the fact that the Student Health Center was rated one of the worst in the country, or given a really bad report card, can't remember the story on that.

It may be changing but in the early 00s I'd say something like 70% of women in their 20s smoked in Chicago and NYC. It was like it was mandatory. Dating a woman that didn't smoke seemed nearly impossible in a major city, not talking about poor people either just women in general...I imagine most of them try to quit when they grew out of the phase.
