I was wanting to work basketball back into my workout regimen. Just wondering where those in the Des Moines area go to shoot hoops year-round?

I am in West Des Moines and hopefully looking for a place to play without buying an expensive membership somewhere.

I'm guessing the Y has reasonable memberships and b-ball, no?

If you find anything that doesn't require a membership fee then let me know. I've been trying to find a weekly open gym or regular pickup game for awhile now.

downtown Y usually has some higher quality competition (ex college players in their late 20's and early 30's). When I lived in Des Moines we played there a lot. Aside from getting dunked on non stop, it was fun.

Let me know if you find a game, I would love to start playing again. I got a Y membership, but don't go there much right now. Live in Urbandale.

I shoot around at the Aspen on Hickman. The competition level there is usually about the same you'd find at the Lied in the courts toward the middle and the far end of the facility. Nothing crazy awesome, but not just old men throwing it around either. Definitely no one good enough to dunk. I usually stay out of the games unless I'm feeling froggy for some reason. I'm not very good when I'm not fully aware of my competition's strengths and weaknesses.

When I was a member at the Walnut Creek YMCA, there were some good pickup games there. And the Waukee Y, too.

I'd love to find a non-member type place, too, though. I'm no longer a member at the Y.

They also have open gym on Monday at Westridge Elementary $2.00/WDM resident, and $3/non-residents - runs through March 3rd.

Starting on January 4th through March 1st, open gym on Saturday, same place, same prices.

West Des Moines : Parks & Recreation

Have you been to it before? Curious of competition level. It's been about 2 year since I played an actual pick up game.

Westridge is about 200 yards from my house, so that would be pretty nice.

Also look into rounding up enough guys and you could start your own league. We did that here for about 10 years, until the participation dropped off too much. We had about 15 - 20 guys and we just worked with the local park district to rent out the gym for 2 hours on Thursday nights. We just played pick up, we'd get there, divide up into teams and play.

The Ankeny YMCA plays on Wednesday nights at 7 and sunday nights at 5. I have only been a few times but they had 20-30 guys there each time I was there.
