Delay of game

Watching the Iowa/Indiana game. Biefeldt just made a basket, grabbed the basketball and threw it to the official on the baseline about 20 feet away.

Just. Like. West Virginia. Every time they make a basket. Ref warned Indiana for delay of game. So is that, like, a rule? Because even though WVU annoys the sheet out of me when they do it, I assumed it is legal. No?

Any my rules experts out there?

Was thinking the same thing. It's not just WVU, every team does this against ISU and no one is ever even warned.

It seems like you really have to complain to refs to get that call, and I don't think we complain enough.

I thought that was a rule change this year that you are allowed to catch it and pass it to the ref.

I see Niang do it a few times as well. It's just natural instinct, for some of the aggressive rebounders, to go after the ball after a shot.

Perfectly fine to toss it to the ref or an opposing player or just leave it on the floor. The ridiculous rule from a couple years ago is gone.

Its not natural to do it after every made basket. Its used to set up the press for West Virginia and its a cheap *** tactic that should be ruled on.

Well that's just false. It's likely left up to the judgment of the ref but the rule says you can't "attempt to gain advantage" by interfering with the ball after a made basket. I think most refs wouldn't look twice if you just hit the ball to the ref as long as you're not obviously knocking it away from an opponent or holding onto the ball.

Yea, it's still a rule. Page 45 of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Rule Book.

Attempting to gain an advantage by interfering with the ball after a goal

The previous rule was the scoring team couldn't touch the ball after it went through the cylinder. I believe it only lasted one year.

Need to designate an assistant coach (or someone with the team right behind the bench) to be "helping" the ref pay attention each time it happens.

I watched this happen several times at the KSU game, and it happened a few times Monday night as well. What irritates me is that the zeebs won't even issue a warning. If it's rule, why isn't it enforced? Everyone knows that ISU likes to run an uptempo offense, and so coaches likely "hint" at ways to slow them down. If you notice, it's generally the same player(s) doing it over and over.

i was very young but I thought danny manning was warned to stop catching the ball after it went thru the basket and he continued to do it. I believe he was given a technical and it was his 5th foul. I think ISU won the game in hilton I was probably 5 and listening on the radio.

It's pretty easy to tell the difference between a ball that fell into someone's hands vs. an intentional act.

We had a game a few years ago where a team had obviously been coached to do it. I warned them for delay and the coach argued,"We're just being courteous." I said,"Thanks. Knock it off."

No wonder they don't call anything anymore. Can't have KU losing.
