The two have followed very different trajectories. Diew was playing at a high level by the end of the year last year. She was very consistent shooting the ball and rebounding. This year she has been a bit of a weather barometer. Up and down. The article mentioned "streaky" and that seems to describe her performances. If she hits that first three point shot...look out. That is usually a very good determination for what is to come during the game. A miss...and it's much the same in the opposite direction. Fritz has been the slow burn. Her intensity is always there. The scoring has taken some prodding from Coach Fen to get her to even shoot the ball. Finally, over that last third of the season we've seen her offense emerge and make her a threat that can't be ignored. When it comes to defense and rebounding...you don't want her on you...she's fierce.
While Coach says we knew what we had in Mo...what we saw was it took time for her to get back into the groove of being the main post. Early on after Soares went down she struggled. Like Fritz, what we've seen in the last third of the season is a fierce competitor that doesn't match with her off the court kindness. This is a big thing for the sisters as well.
Two other things that were different in the conference tournament compared to the regular season...First, in the Texas game what we saw from Joens was a bit different than other games. Yes, she took over the game, but what was different is that she seemed "pissed." It was like "ok, if the officials aren't going to make the calls I'm going gangbusters and force the issue." It was like she took her game to another level. That's what the great ones do. Second, Donarski became much more aggressive on offense. Yes, she misses some layups, but we saw her driving and being the instigator much more often than in the past. This also bodes well for the sisters.
