Or maybe not coming back:

How much did they expect? There are 254 division 1 football teams. Multiply that by the 105 man roster (I know some rosters are smaller). That's a lot of money.

254 x 105 x $500 = $13.3M

My guess is they know how much the NFLPA gets for royalties for the Madden games and it is significantly (50x or more) higher than $500/player.

Now granted there are way more NCAA players than NFL players so that number is most likely not feasible.
With the number of players and the way the payout for Madden works I'm not sure they are very comparable.

Rerelease NCAA 14 for PS5 for all I care. They'd make a killing with just that. License to the schools and do generic names again.
You can play NCAA 14 on PC if you have one that can run it, College Football Revamped, it's honestly amazing. I agree it would sell well, but the way they make a killing on their other games is by monetizing the **** out of them with in game purchases, loot boxes, etc.

The game making philosophy for EA Sports has changed since NCAA 14.

NCAA:

105 players/team x 129 teams x $500/player = $6,772,500

NFL:

32 teams x 53 active roster players x $25k/player (at least) = $42,400,000

Bumping up the NCAA rate to $5k = $67,725,000
Bumping up the NCAA rate to $10k = $135,450,000

The game was an annual release based on those original rosters, the team playbooks and how well those players could execute those first few seasons. The only way EA could avoid potential litigation would be to make each school opposite of what they are: Iowa State for example could be a 5 WR Air Raid Offense with a 5-2 defense in order to avoid any NIL. Yes, you like could change that but now instead of changing player names you would likely need to change attribute ratings and do that for each team whereas EA did all that work (except for names) before.

If this was any other software company, I would expect them to make the game with made up teams and players, but make the game very mod-able. It's been shown over and over again that fans will make things the creators didn't even think about.

But I'm sure EA has a playbook that includes costly add-ons in the future, so they won't change course.

Saw on Reddit people suggesting they agree to a percentage of revenue and then split it evenly with the players. I think that is probably your best bet as a player to get any more than $500. The players are being downright greedy. They should be compensated but they aren’t the main reason or really even a primary reason people are buying the game.

The original rosters are the least important part of the game. The ai generated recruits and recruiting are what make the game. Sucks this is what has held the series back.

I would agree. I would have to think they could have a way to set a completely generic starting roster while taking into account Alabama's overall rating being higher than Iowa States. But the true fun of the game (for me at least) was the recruiting and program building. I don't think a ton would be lost by starting with a generic team.

That's chump change though. Plus certain players are clearly more valuable. Might never happen though cause these businesses are never going to pay what people are worth.

Off topic, but does anyone else play MLB The Show 2023?

I'm a baseball traditionalist so figured it would be cool to turn off the DH and let pitchers hit in the NL like they used to.

I got about 25 games in and every single NL team was batting about .360 and averaging 10 runs a game. Nothing like the league leaders having 120 homers and 300 rbis for a pure baseball simulation junkie like myself.

I dont know how a game makes it past QA with that kind of bug.

You want OOTP (Out of the park baseball) if you are a sim guy. Best sim game out there.

Why would the playbook matter? Its not like Iowa State's playbook is part of the name, image and likeness of any player.

All they would need to do from an NIL standpoint is give each team initial players that look exactly alike (maybe per position) with generic names.

I believe $25k is high but either way I don't think the average FBS player is worth 1/7 of am NFL player.
