How many beers, let's just say about 12 oz, would you say the average adult male consumed per day, say from about 1000-1700 AD? Let alone non-adults.

I mean beer (and probably wine too) were a staple, considering how water and other drinks were not necessarily pure.

My favorite thing that is related to this is in Russia beer isn't even considered like an adult beverage. It's in a similar category to soda.

Too bad there was so much taxation on beer back then. Maybe with less taxation the Germans would have been less warlike!

Don't worry about it Hans. Here, have another beer!

Now I know why the Germans and English got into it! Beer vs. ale/gruit!

It all makes sense now.

I love gruit, Prof. Fritz Briem makes a fantastic one (if you can find it): https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/23495/44016/
BUT, if beer is important to you, then the Weihenstephaner brewery should be on your bucket list, along with Andechs cloister.
Thank you. It's all just interesting to me. To me, beer and gruit/ale is the same. Now I guess I know better.

Up to now I thought it was all 'just' beer. I now know just enough to be very dangerous. :D

My wife and I had planned to go on a 10 year anniversary trip last year to Germany and Belgium, which of course didn’t happen due to covid. Anyways, we had planned to tour the Weihenstephaner brewery while over there. It’s crazy that it’s been operating since 1040! Maybe if things go well we can make it over there next year…
