I remember an extremely ****-faced Wayne Bolt being one of our "celebrities" at our table for Cy's House of Trivia. The Spring Game had finished just an hour or so earlier, and given his level of intoxication he almost had to have been drunk at the game.
Maybe that is why our defense sucked so bad while he was here.

I had Rocks for Jocks my freshman year and randomly sat by Jake Varner. Good guy, knew he was an athlete and could tell he was a wrestler. Didn't realize he was that damn good!

Also my freshman year a buddy of mine and I walked into Larch late one night and a girl from my buddy's home town was there at the bottom floor elevators waiting to let someone in. We stood and talked and couple moments later knock knock on the door. Craig Brackins. They were bangin'. Hella weird elevator ride together.

It's not really that interesting but it sticks out in my mind, especially since he's gone now. But I saw Vroman at a campus town bar one night sitting on a stool with a few ladies around him smoking a cigarette. His legs were just so long and he was wearing shades while smoking that he really stood out. He was telling us that he wasn't even supposed to be in the bars or he'd get into trouble.

Ran into this guy in the elevator of our hotel at the 2017 Big 12 Tournament. The elevator door opens and one of my friends whispers, that guy looks like Bruce Weber. I said "Cuz it is Bruce Weber". After about 5-10 seconds of awkward silence of Bruce, my 6 friends and myself in the elevator, I strike up a brief convo. Told him my mom was a University of Illinois grad and he was still he favorite coach to this day. We chatted briefly about Central Illinois and family. He wished us luck vs TCU that night and hoped they could beat WVU to see us in the championship game. (only one of those happened) Said he enjoyed ISU fans. Pretty cool guy.

The next day it lead to my all time interaction with Monte and his mother after we won the championship. I had my custom #notmycousyawardlist shirt on.

First impression of David Montgomery came in his first ever class at Iowa State which I was also in. It was an American Indian Studies summer class that a bunch of the incoming freshmen football players at the time were also in. David walks in wearing full groutfit (it was like 95 plus insane humidity that day), and my first impression was that he did not look anything like a football player, and quite honestly looked like a scrub. First thing he does when he walks in the room is he asks the professor if he could go to the bathroom and the professor responds "dude this is college, I don't give a ****." David was more shocked that the professor said "I don't give a ****" than he was about not having to ask about going to the bathroom. I guess he had literally just graduated from high school that Friday before and this was on a Monday. I ended up doing a group project with him for that class and he was honestly one of the coolest guys ever.

I took a basketball class one quarter at ISU. Not sure what the hell possessed me to do that. We were doing some drill and I was so inflexible the instructor asked me if I had injured my knees. Instructor was Matt Blair. Was at a local ISU alumni thingy a year or so ago and was sitting with him and shared the story for a laugh. He was a really good basketball player and his team pretty much stomped everyone in intramurals.

I have plenty but here are a few that stand out.

This one has been posted but is worth reposting.
I had an uncle on the team during the Orr years so I would be at tons of practices and games. I was under 2 years old so this story has just been told to me.
One time during practice he was holding me and decided to have me score a basket on the floor. He then put a chair on the court and held me up while I put the ball in. Before he put me down, I took a dump in my diapers and it leaked from my pants and got crap all over him. He then preceded to say "Will somebody get this ****** kid off of me?!" It may have not been a good memory but I will never forget it!

Player version-
I was once out on Welch on a Saturday night when the team was celebrating a player's birthday. There was a girl by the bathroom sobbing while on the phone. Monte Morris walks by, sees the troubled girl and gently puts his hand on her back and says to her "Whoever he is, he isn't worth it." She immediately turns around to thank them and then her face lights up to realize it was Monte. Never seen such a mood change in the matter of seconds.

I have had dozens of memories over the years as I have friends on teams. All of the great encounters makes me even more proud to be a cyclone!

Posted this in another thread, but it is fitting here as well.

So......A couple of David Montgomery anecdote(s) from before the season (2018-2019)started.

Usually take the family to Fan Fest in August before the first game. This last year was no different. We typically can make it through all of the lines and meet all the athletes that are there (there is usually a good little story that comes out of these sessions and it usually involves my youngest (10) - who famously asked Q. Bundrage several years ago if he was going to catch the ball this year (this following a year of some high profile drops) - much to the delight of his teammates who realized he had just been burned by a 7 year old.

So onto this year. My 10 year old is in front of me and making his way through the lines when he comes to DM. My son is in Scouts (Dad is an Eagle Scout himself), and he knew that David was one as well. So he asks him what he did for his project. Being a spectator to this, and a dad, time literally stood still. DM didn't have to say anything other than a brief reply and on to the next person. For him to speak to my son for several minutes and have a real conversation with him beyond just a "Thanks", or "Good Luck", speaks to the kind of person that we all believed he was, and the person we had heard he was. It is definitely a cool thing to see when the behaviors displayed lives up to and exceeds the hype (which is pretty rare in today's day and age....especially in athletics). For that I am a DM fan for life.

Being next in line behind my son, I continued on with our conversation with him and asked him if he had finished Rich Dad, Poor Dad (read an article in the Reg. that he had been reading this book, which I would highly recommend). He replied that he had not yet finished the book. To which I replied that that was a good read and I recommended another book for his reading list, The Millionaire Next Door. He said that he had not read that book, and asked if it was pretty good, to which I replied that it was, adding that it would help him out and come in pretty handy where he was going. I don't recall who was sitting next to him, but he burst out laughing once he heard the punchline.

Back in 2011 after the triple overtime (football) against Iowa, my husband and I rushed the field. After celebrating on the field, I turned and asked a group of tall young men to "block" for me as we left the field. The group included Royce White, Korey L, and others. We talked and they escorted me all the way to the sidewalk outside Jack Trice. No coach was around and they really didn't have to do this or be so nice.

That's one of Monte's moves.

He walked out to the parking lot, opened the van door and stuck his head in the door and played Angry Birds with him for about 15 minutes. I thought that was pretty crazy for a college guy coming off a huge win on a Saturday night.

This made my day, thanks for posting.

I organized the game watches in Seattle a number of years ago. Kickoffs were invariably at 9am on the west coast and the team wasn’t very good, so our groups were usually pretty small, maybe 10-20 people. One morning there was on older gentleman sitting in a booth by himself. After a bit, I went over to introduce myself and see if he was an alum, etc. Turned out he was Zaid Abdul-Aziz (Don Smith in his playing days). He’s an absolute Cyclone basketball legend - his jersey is one of the 7 that hang in Hilton. Long story short, he’s an exceptional human being. Kind, humble, thoughtful, gentle and extremely personable. I was blown away this Cyclone legend was happy to just sit in back and watch some football with no fanfare or attention.

Did a charity golf tourney at The Harvester, sometime in early 2000s. Johnny was right behind our group and on a few occasions was waiting at the tee when we were up.

I am not a good golfer, especially off the tee.

His onslaught was withering but funnier than hell. Wish I had a video of some of it.

I run into Tracy Henderson (All Big 8/All American WR) at Costco quite often. He always is happy to talk Cyclone sports with me for a while.

One night after working on our new RAGBRAI bus all one late summer day we stopped at West Towne Pub for a cold one. The place was deserted so we ended up talking to the bartender for a few minutes. I see a tall young kid walking toward the door and immediately recognize him as a BB recruit we had coming in with a funny spelled name. My first thought was "don't do it kid, I know you're not old enough." The kid was very respectful and asked if they were still serving food. They said the kitchen was closed and he thanked the bartender and left. My next thought was, "good job, kid." I informed the other guys that the kid was Georges Niang, an incoming freshman and he was probably going to be a pretty good player for Fred.

My brother once texted me a picture of him with Barry Switzer. I had to razz him a bit because it was obvious that the picture was taken in a stadium men's room.

Julo Michalik was a great guy who always talked to me whenever he saw me when I worked at Hilton. The rest of the players really never had anything to say to the staff. Julo was (and probably still is) a very funny guy. Follow him on twitter.

My husband’s office was in the same building as KIOA. My son would spend evenings at the office and would ride his Tyke Trike up and down the hall and occasionally run into a wall/door. Pete Taylor was doing his radio show and thought someone was knocking on the door. So he opened the door and it was only a three year old. Pete asked him his name and favorite team and they high five. Pete always acknowledged him whenever he saw him in the building
