I usually get a fresh turkey reserved through Fareway for Christmas but sounds like it's a no-go this year. Anyone know of anywhere in DSM area that sells fresh turkeys? TIA.

I got one from them for Thanksgiving here in Ames. I guess I never asked about Christmas though.

Have you noticed a big difference in quality from fresh to buying frozen and thawing it for 3-4 days prior?

Avian influenza has ravaged the supply.

I think so? Good question, I've just gotten fresh every year for many years now, mostly to avoid having to defrost for days. Might find out for sure this year.

Google tells me several of the metro Targets have them now. Not sure if they will at Christmas.
Was just going to say I think I've seen them at Target - of all places - in mid to late December more than anywhere else. I can't think of any place that has them past around the first week of December.

We did fresh this year for thanksgiving after usually doing frozen. I personally didn't notice a difference but i'm not a connoisseur

I can’t say for sure because this is the first year I’ve done fresh and also first time spatchcocking but it was fantastic. Took half the time to cook and was super moist.

I've spatchcocked Frozen Turkey and worked great. Brining makes a big difference though.

If you can wait until the 18th to get a bird, just get your license, tag, and some archery equipment and go stick yourself a bird.
