Ours stunk. Hunted Hamilton Co. close to the Boone River. Only saw two bucks, and very few does. No shots as all deer were out of range. We really thought the snow would help, but the wind may have offset any advantage we had.

Perhaps the DNR has, indeed, succeeded in thinning the herd?

I nailed a big sucker just north of Hiawatha a few weeks ago. Not sure how many points as he ran off into the woods after he totaled my truck.

I drove over to Garwin to see some family for part of the day...saw lot's of hunters out. I would rather they get them then me with my car. I would love to go deer hunting again, sadly I haven't gone for a few years and wont' get out this year.

Mine wasn't so hot either. Our camp only shot 5, 7 if you count two that lived. I saw 8, but I only had one tag so I decided to be a bit more conservative than usual. One of the bucks I saw is going to be real nice next year except his rack has no spread to it. I believe this was his dad:

The rack looked exactly the same with less mass. And this one was shot before I saw the other one.

The rest of the bucks I saw weren't any bigger than the one I had mounted a few years back so I don't see any point in shooting them. The does I saw were all the first morning and I didnt want to kill out right away and not be able to hunt again.

I hunted Calhoun County, IL here... IRB++DUCKS+N+BUCKS++HARDIN ILLINOIS

My buddy shot this one though

I'm pretty jealous. It had a rough score in the upper 180s.

i don't mind the killing part, but it's the cold part that i don't like

ha! I'm with you dude. I'd hunt if it were warm and you didn't have to sit around in the woods all day.

Hunting reports
-> guy south of Iowa city: lots of deer, filled 2 doe tags being picky on a buck
-> my boss: somewhere south of Tama-ish: sucked, has seen 5 deer in 5 trips
-> coworker in the UP (MI): sucked, no deer
-> coworker somewhere around CR: sucked no deer.

so 3/4 agree that is sucks this year, and the other guys an ahole IC resident anyway.

I didn't get to go this year because I had to have eye surgery a couple of weeks ago to repair a detached retina in my right eye (also my dominant shooting eye), but my dad and uncle filled their tags this morning with a big bodied but small-rack buck and a doe.

The hunters claim the herd is getting thinned out but there are still plenty out there. The DNR needs to keep thinning the herd.

The DNR needs to keep thinning the herd.

That's what my insurance agent buddy says and I would think the DNR will keep up the pressure until out of state big money hunters quit coming. The they'll swing back the other way.

We did see one huge buck in a field just east of I-35 between Ames and Elkhart exit. Too bad we weren't road hunting.

We saw a lot of deer yesterday and today. I shot an 11 pointer. Biggest deer I've ever shot. Another guy in our group shot a nice 9 pointer. There were 2 does taken by other guys in the group.

Our group saw probably 50+ deer over the past 3 days in NW Iowa. We had 7 bucks and 1 doe when I left this afternoon...5 more tags to fill. One of the bucks was a BIG 8pt...easily 170

damn near a record year for my group. 18 opening day, 6 by noon yesterday. 24 total between 9 guys. my dad and i took 10 of em, and before anyone asks, yes they were all taken legally with tags. we got 4 nice 8 pointers out of the group, probably all around 120 or so-no wall hangers though.

i do, however, agree that the herd is down. we are very lucky with where we hunt, and know exactly how to hunt it with success. add that to the fact that everyone was shooting lights out this year, and that explains why we got so many. most were killed with 1 shot-that is nice.
