Today is the MLB Draft, which isn't generally as big of a deal as the NFL and NBA drafts, as these players are obviously stowed away in the minors for a few years before making and impact... If they make an impact at all. I found this article (beware: slideshow) on players that teams "missed" in the MLB Draft. They also photoshopped that team's hat onto the player they missed on. Very interesting.

As a Mariners fan, it's hard to take missing on Troy Tulowitzki and Mike Trout.

I like looking at these things to. Dodgers didn't take Clemens at 18, then Red Sox took him right after. Expos passed on Clemens at 14 and 16 in same draft.

All organizations make picks that look bad...but the Cardinals never seem to be that organization! Crazy to think they could have selected Frank Thomas. Wow...that would have changed things on the South Side of Chicago!

Just saw this on the MLB At Bat app while looking for another kid I know who plays JUCO baseball in Kansas:

Didn't know Custer was a baseball prospect, too.

Probably the highest ranked Iowa native ever drafted was Jeff Clement at #3 in 2005. Ahead of Braun, Zimmerman, Bruce, McCutcheon and Elsbury. Never really developed as a major leaguer. Hit .218 in 152 ML games, don't think he is playing anymore.

SO many of the "misses" were pitchers who blew out their arms.

It's interesting to think about teams passing on guys because of signability though. Just because they could have taken them, doesn't mean they would have signed with the team. One of the pitfalls of the MLB draft.

It's so hard to project a lot of these guys and a lot depends on the farm system and development. So much different than the NFL.
