If you read HN or listened to anything that drunk moron podolak had to say after the game, you'd think Northern Illinois is a top 25 team. "possibly the best defense Iowa will face this season". put the bottle down old man, you're carrying on like a complete jack***.

And I love hearing jim zabel on sound off. completely out of touch with reality. news flash jim, it ain't 1985 anymore and you're about as educated on today's game as Iowa's offense is "explosive".

It is going to be great to roll into kinnick and kick their teeth in next week. cannot wait to hear all the pissign, whining, and excuses from them come saturday evening.

When I heard Podolak say that I thought it was pretty stupid but I guess he's paid to say stupid things so I don't read much into it. I don't know that the Clones will kick the Hawks teeth in but it could happen.

Also, if you are bothered by what those people say, why read or listen? Makes sense to stay away.

I heard that last night and thought it was pandering to an extreme degree, even for being the Hawk homer that he is. Hopefully at least some of the Hawk fans listening were smart enough to see through that garbage. Looking at their schedule, I see at least 5 other teams that will have defenses as good or better (a couple by a wide margin) than NIU's.

Also, I think some of our fans need to stop short of saying our guys are going to go in there and kick their tails. It's been quite awhile since we've been competitive in Kinnick.

Does Eddie realize that Michigan State is in iowa's division? I understand that NIU returned a lot of starters from last year, but they did give up a ton of points at times last season. Maybe their D is better than ISU's (I doubt it), but it sure the heck isn't one of the top D's they'll face this year.

I heard Podolak say that too and couldn't believe someone who's played successfully at the highest level would say something so ridiculous. Check out the "vaunted" NIU defensive ppg last year:

Phyllis, if what I heard is true you should party with someone other than Podolak. I heard that Eddie was on the wagon.

We all know that last year = this year. Correct.

Yes, most of us are aware that N Illinois is not the best defense we will see. Yes, most of us realize Iowa isn't very good. Yes, the B10 sucks. Yes, ISU has a very real shot of winning in Kinnick.

We get it.

I, like cyphillis, would still party with Podolak.

Most of you all on HN are being pretty reasonable. After just hearing horror stories here, I was pretty disappointed.

Pessimists on that site. Other than a few. Remember, we want to fire everyone. I like the offseason on that site, but during the year....holy crap they complain a lot.

I just watched Hawkeye highlights of the game... And my observation is that yes, we are speedier than them. I also think for the first time in a long time we won't be noticeably smaller than them across the board. Yes, we will be in some spots like CB and WR, but we're getting there

Put down the bottle Ed.

We can do tables now?

Now that is cool.

Back on topic though, NIU is a good MAC team....but that's what they are, a good MAC team. They are not a Big 12, or a Big 10 or a Pac 12 or a SEC or even a ACC or Big East team. They are in the conference they are in for a reason. Iowa is going to have problems if they continue to play like they did Saturday.

Let's face it, I don't think NIU is any better than they were last year and Kansas beat them last season. Does that really make you feel good Iowa? You beat NIU by a smaller margin than the 2012 Kansas Jayhawks. Just be glad you are not in the Big 12.

Yeah, and you beat Kansas by the same margin that they beat NIU.

Do you see how stupid that sounds? Teams can and do change from year to year.

A vaunted Defense indeed. Eddie still hitting the sauce obviously.

Some other doozies from Sound Off.....paraphrasing from Ed:

"Tulsa is not that good"

--Blaming all of Iowa's problems today on the soldier field turf.

---Receivers unable to get separation

---offensive line issues, all because of poor turf.

Does anyone know if Northern Illinois played on a different turf?

You're right - 2 appearances ago was a long time ago...

I wouldn't consider 2008 to be a competitive appearance. The game was not as close as the score indicated.....it was a sloppy field and a sloppy game by ISU to add to it. 2006 was closer to being competitive, but that one still felt like Iowa was going to keep ISU at bay no matter what. Each of those games ended with 2 score deficits. I think 2004 was the last time we were truly competitive there, and both teams ended up being fairly solid that year.

They do, thanks for backing me up.

I don't think for a second that Iowa is as bad as Kansas was last year and NIU may have just been a bad match up to Iowa. We have seen Iowa nearly trip in openers before and have really successful seasons (2009 comes to mind). But you do not sit and build up a team in order to make your team look better. Just say we sucked. We did not play up to potential and we have to get a lot of things cleaned up or it will be a long year. Don't pretend like you just beat a reigning BCS conference champion and stop making excuses.

There are Cyclone fans who think Iowa is going to tank. I have two things to say:

1) to those fans: when has Iowa tanked in recent memory? I don't remember Iowa doing worse than 6 wins so don't think that Saturday is going to be a walk in the park.

2) to hawk fans: what has Iowa done to prove the above fans wrong? Nothing! You can make the above fans eat their words on Saturday, until then though, they may be right.

You seriously think we are acting like we just beat a reigning BCS conference champion?
