Can any resident experts explain how this escalated so quickly?

Not an expert, but I feel like it was supposed to be a tad warmer throughout the day leading to more rain as precipitation, but it stayed relatively cool and allowed the snow to start much earlier.

I'm sorry, just heard a report that Lone Rock is supposed to get 20" by the end of Friday.
Promise?

Dry slotted right now, kind of disappointing so far, but looks like the heavier stuff isn't gonna come down til later

Unusual system. It's a cutoff low that is now in Minnesota/Wisconsin and is going to retrograde back into eastern Iowa, so that's pretty freaky to begin with, and harder to forecast a track for since it's cutoff from the jet, essentially just wobbling around like a spinning top.

Also it's a low coming out of the NW...not one from the SW and pulling in moisture from the gulf.

Storms coming out of the NW it's always a pain trying to figure out how much Pacific moisture has survived the trip.

Totals will bust if that heavy band moves around too much tomorrow and spreads it out, or stalls in the wrong spot. It's a shaky forecast totals-wise, but the wind will cover up a lot of that and you won't be able to tell, unless you get pushed totally out of the snow.
