According to the R&A it was always The Open and Americans started calling it The British Open. I guess to distinguish it from The US OpenWhen did The 'British' Open become 'The Open'?
My guess it was their are some Open sites in Ireland or one of the other imperial republics? But I'm not aware of the exact reason.
