EVANSTON, Ill. – Seven Iowa State wrestlers punched their ticket to quarterfinal action at the 45th Midlands Championships Saturday in Welsh-Ryan Arena as the Cyclones closed out the first session in second place with 44 points. Iowa, which had nine wrestlers in the championship bracket, leads the team scoring with 50 points. Cyler Sanderson, seeded second at 157 pounds, led ISU by tallying bonus points in three matches. Second-seeded Jake Varner pinned both of his opponents at 184 pounds and David Bertolino won two bouts resulting in bonus points at 197 pounds. Central Michigan, Illinois and Indiana round out the top-five in the team scoring.
