I think it fades in and out so if you don't see it immediately don't worry. Also all the pics you see exaggerate it, not as pretty with the naked eye unfortunately.

Went out north of Indianola and then out on a gravel road in the middle of nowhere, but either the lights are showing up as haze to the naked eye, or there's too much haze to see them.
Yes, a lot of hyperbole, but as you said a really big one could be catastrophic as much as we rely on electricity and electronic devices.
