I always thought it was strange he continued to cover Cyclone sports after his brother was busted by the university for having kiddy porn on his office computer.
It was Rick Brown's brother who was busted for child porn.

Is it really a surprise when a guy in his 70s hangs 'em up?
Best of luck to Randy
That's right. Wrong reporter. It was Rick Brown's brother who was busted for child porn.
I could just imagine Eickholt asking TJ about heading to Carver comparing it to Phog.I didn't have any major problems with Randy. Sometimes he'd make me roll my eyes, but overall I thought he treated ISU pretty fairly, and I have respect for someone who loves their job so much they do it for 52 years. I don't get all the hate. I think some of the posters would rather have a Chad Leistikow and David Eickholt type homer covering the Cyclones. As far as I'm concerned, no thanks!
It ain’t over til it’s over.I’m sure more than a few thought that they’d have to remove his ink-stained corpse from the newsroom.
I believe Travis is very, very good.Does this make Hines the Sr. ISU reporter? I'm not really impressed with him either.

We may not have liked what the article said, but I believe it was accurately reported. Were his sources telling the accurate truth? Who knows. And, based on the fallout radio interviews afterwards, you’ll never convince me that Fed wasn’t one of his sources. Fred claimed he told Travis not to run it, Hines response to Chris was the quote from the article: Fred wasn’t available for comment. And when Chris pressed, he repeated it. Do the math. He’s a good sports journalist overall, but he always carries himself as being too good for this job.
Most aren’t impressed simply due to the infamous “double digit sources” story that stretched the truth
This. I think Hines is fine except that one thing, which rightfully sullied his reputation with ISU fans. He’s a good sports journalist overall, but he always carries himself as being too good for this job.

I can see how his “above it all” shtick could wear thin, but I suspect we’ll miss him when he’s gone.

Idk that any of his “sources” were lying, but the way it was laid out in the article, without naming names, was not great.
It was kind of like a political ad. The subject may be technically true, but it’s embellished and presented in a way to make the other person/party look bad. The article was presented in a way to make Pollard look bad; hence why Fred didn’t want Hines to run it despite likely being a source.
I could see what he wrote being factual. I'm sure Pollard and the athletic department have made financial decisions on things like hotel rooms lots of times that have rubbed people the wrong way. That's just typical workplace stuff. Who doesn’t get pissed occasionally when their employer starts penny pinching? To go all Woodward and Bernstein with it was just stupid. I don't know if he thought he was going to get a Pulitzer for it or something, but he's still here so clearly it didn't lead to bigger and better things. I think he is fine the majority of the time, but the phrase "nearly double digit sources" will be his legacy.Idk that any of his “sources” were lying, but the way it was laid out in the article, without naming names, was not great.
