Midnight gettin' uptight Where are you
You said you'd meet me now it's quarter to two
I know I'm hangin' but I'm still wantin' you

Hey Jack It's a fact they're talkin' in town
I turn my back and you're messin' around
I'm not really jealous don't like lookin' like a clown

I think of you ev'ry night and day
You took my heart then you took my pride away

I hate myself for loving you
Can't break free from the the things that you do
I wanna walk but I run back to you that's why
I hate myself for loving you

Daylight spent the night without you
But I've been dreamin' 'bout the lovin' you do
I won't be as angry 'bout the hell you put me through

Hey man betcha you can treat me right
You just don't know what you was missin' last night
I wanna see you beggin', say forget it just for spite

I think of you ev'ry night and day
You took my heart then you took my pride away

I hate myself for loving you
Can't break free from the the things that you do
I wanna walk but I run back to you, that's why
I hate myself for loving you

I think of you ev'ry night and day
You took my heart then you took my pride away

I hate myself for loving you
Can't break free from the things that you do
I wanna walk but I run back to you that's why
I hate myself for loving you

I think of you ev'ry night and day
You took my heart then you took my pride away

I hate myself for loving you
Can't break free from the the things that you do
I wanna walk but I run back to you that's why
I hate myself for loving you
I hate myself
For loving you
I hate myself
For loving you
I hate myself
For loving you
I hate myself
I hate myself for loving you

I tried to pick just a few lines from this Tool track but just couldn't narrow it down. A lot of Maynard's analogies can be off putting for some people but I think he is a brilliant song writer. One of, if not, the best ever.
This post suffers from MJS.

One of my favorite lyrical bands is Flogging Molly.

"Present State of Grace"

Welcome home to the men
And the women who defend
Back to their lives and the lies
Shat on them by government
Through the barbs and the pokes
And the ones we'd like to choke
It's this present state of grace I offer thee

"What's Left of the Flag"

from the east out to the western shore
where many men and many more will fall
but no angel flies with me tonight
though freedom reigns on all
and curse the name for which
we slaved our days
so every man chose Kingdom Come
But sure as night turns day
it's the passion play
oh my god
what have they done
with madman's rage
well they dug our graves
but the dead rise again you fools

"Forty-Six & 2"

My shadow's

Shedding skin and
I've been picking
Scabs again.
I'm down
Digging through
My old muscles
Looking for a clue.

I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been.
I've been wallowing in my own confused
And insecure delusions
For a piece to cross me over
Or a word to guide me in.
I wanna feel the changes coming down.
I wanna know what I've been hiding in

My shadow.
Change is coming through my shadow.
My shadow's shedding skin
I've been picking
My scabs again.

I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been.
I've been wallowing in my own chaotic
And insecure delusions.

I wanna feel the change consume me,
Feel the outside turning in.
I wanna feel the metamorphosis and
Cleansing I've endured within

My shadow
Change is coming.
Now is my time.
Listen to my muscle memory.
Contemplate what I've been clinging to.
Forty-six and two ahead of me.

I choose to live and to
Grow, take and give and to
Move, learn and love and to
Cry, kill and die and to
Be paranoid and to
Lie, hate and fear and to
Do what it takes to move through.

I choose to live and to
Lie, kill and give and to
Die, learn and love and to
Do what it takes to step through.

See my shadow changing,
Stretching up and over me.
Soften this old armor.
Hoping I can clear the way
By stepping through my shadow,
Coming out the other side.
Step into the shadow.
Forty six and two are just ahead of me.

That cracks me up that we've gotten to the point where good bands will play IT Conferences where half the audience isn't familiar with the band and is more concerned about the free bar.
I had a friend see Bon Jovi at a Cisco conference this week.

Sincerely,
An IT Professional

A couple more:

Oh it’s okay for you to say what you want from me
I believe that’s the only way for me to be exactly
What you want me to be
Ah it’s okay for you to say
What you want from me
I believe that’s the only way for me to be
Exactly what you want me to be
— “Handshake Drugs,â€￾ Wilco
(Also: “I was chewin’ gum for something to doâ€￾ and “I looked like someone I used to knowâ€￾)

I feel like I’m trapped in a book
About someone else
— “Pirate,â€￾ Too Much Joy

I've never heard this and don't know what it's in context to, but that's an amazing lyric.

I'm not a huge Bob Dylan fan but he was a great lyricist. Anything Pink Floyd I love

Resurrecting this thread. A few other "lyrics I love."

“Cartoon,†Soul Asylum

This song is packed with isolated lines that still resonate.

  • But I've got to know what's got the best of me.
  • When the circus that you left goes on parade.
  • Did it almost make you feel that something’s got to happen soon?
  • If you're crying in your beer, you're gonna drown,
  • Maybe I'm chasing shadows on your wall / They loom so large, but make me feel so small somehow
  • There's a ringing in my ears that's heaven-sent.
  • If you think we'll rise above, you'd better look around, you'll see. (“rise above†reference is a backhanded swipe at Black Flag — that's another thread).
“Never Go Back,†Camper Van Beethoven
And if you see me sittin’ around
Thinkin’ the same old thoughts
Over and over again
Or going back to old ways I’ve long ago abandoned
Please, tell me
Never go back
