AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team and head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch announced the signing of three prep standouts for the 2010 season. Joining the Cyclones next fall will be defensive specialist Kristen Hahn (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), middle blocker Tenisha Matlock (North Platte, Neb.) and outside hitter Hannah Willms (Waterloo, Iowa).

“For the class of 2010 we wanted to bring in some potential offensive terminators, as well as bolster our backcourt defense,â€￾ Johnson-Lynch said. “I believe we have achieved that with this class. All three of these players have the potential to have a tremendous impact on our program as we continue to work toward our goals of competing for a conference and national championship.â€￾

Willms, an explosive 6-0 outside hitter, was ranked the No. 37 player in the country by PrepVolleyball.com after a standout career at Dike-New Hartford High School. One of the top high jumpers in the country, Willms brings a bevy of accolades to Iowa State.

She is a three-time all-conference selection and was named conference player of the year her junior season. This year’s conference awards have not been announced.

Willms was also recently named to the Des Moines Register’s All-State Elite Team after recording 570 kills for an average of 5.18 per set this season. She also averaged 2.70 digs and 0.56 blocks in leading the Wolverines to the state tournament.

Willms is also one of the elite high school track athletes in the country as a two-time state champion in the high jump. Her jump of 6-0 ¼ was the top jump in the nation in high school last year. She also won the 400M, 200M and was a member of the sprint medley relay championship team.

Hannah Willms is an amazing athlete. I suspect she will do great things at Iowa State.

I was talking with their club coach after the Texas match...

He didn't say a whole lot about Willms, but couldn't stop talking about Hahn. Says he hasn't had a backrow player so scrappy and able to keep the ball alive the way she could.

Really interested in this Matlock girl. Not alot of press on her. But Nebraska has put out alot of good middles over the years.... and we are the beneficiaries one of the latest in Straube this season. Sounds like a real athlete and leaper. Possibly a solid replacement for Henson at OH after next season.

CJ must feel really good about Allison Landwehr picking up for Manns - not inking another setter. That, and must think Pratt is a solid back up as well (injury), since we'll only have two setters listed on the roster for 2010.

The videos of these kids on cyclones.com are good.

I am excited about all three. Obviously Landwehr will have huge shoes to fill!! I wonder if only playing in five sets allows consideration for a redshirt??

Good question. And a good one for Chris to ask next chance get gets to speak with CJL.

But according to the NCAAs - doesn't look likely

They even use volleyball as an example
You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.
