With awards coming out this week thought we could have thread on it. I'm not a huge awards tracker and don't freak if we don't get some but this year we have more notable candidates than usual.

Pre-season picks had Joens and Donarski as All-Big 12 and Ryan Honorable Mention. Post-season has 1st team (10 players), 2nd Team (five players) and Honorable Mention. Joens is going to be a unanimous pick but Ryan is a lock also (11th in scoring and 1st in assists by a mile). So, probably all three in on first team. Don't think Cyclones have a 2nd team candidate and just not sure about Honorable mention. Aubrey Joens looked like she had a shot fo that half way through he season but didn't sustain that play.

POY is likely Baylor's Smith. Shame to have three players averaging almost a double/double (Smith and Lee did and Joens almost did). Smith/Lee/Joens all 1-2-3 in scoring and rebounding. Shame to have to pick one and pass over the other two but Smith gets the nod. Smith was the pre-season pick and answered the bell expectation-wise.

COY will be interesting. It's between Fennelly and Jenny B. Collen won the conference but she was picked to do that so did what she was supposed to do and I think that bumps her out along with the "it was Mulkey's team". Considering other coaches success in conference bumping Collen is 100% justifiable. Sort of a dead heat between Fennelly and Barancyk. Both finished where they were picked. Barancyk did do more with Sherri's players than Sherri's did so she has that going but that seems to have been predicted in the preseason poll. Voted by coaches and not so sure our coaches is loved by some of them. No feel for how hey feel about newcomer Jenny. Not sure "nominated but not won before" like movie awards plays into coaches thinking on voting, maybe but lots of newer coaches in the league. Grabbing a piece of the title would have iced it for either one of them.

Cyclones…
1st team - Joens and Ryan
2nd team - Donarski
All defensive team - Donarski
POY - Smith
COY- Schneider (KU) if we had won the conference I could see Bill being considered. Don’t see any way he gets it this year For the same reason posted about Baylor's coach. Jenny had too many losses that were mystifying.

She also gets benefit of the doubt due to being on the conference champion. I'd be shocked if anyone else won it, and I have no problem with her winning.

Truth. Played great and was pre-season pick so not much benefit of the doubt needed but winning the conference for sure locked it up.

Do we know why there are 10 people on the 1st team? Has it always been like this? If so, 'because they always have' is a perfectly simple 4 word response....

It hasn't always been this way. It used to be 5 first 5 second 5 third, but other conferences changed to the current format 15-ish years ago and the Big 12 decided to follow suit

Been that way since '03.

Before that, they had three teams: 5-5-5.

Wow! We knew Lexi was a great defender, but it's great to see others recognize it.

Agree. Her defensive stats like steals and blocks weren't amazing but there is more to great defense than those kind of stats. Every night she took on the best player from every team had and more often than not they probably had their worst offensive performance of the season.
