I was looking into a trip to the Keys several months back. I was looking at VRBO for houses since we would have had a group. There were a few choices out there for less than you'd might think. If you are just needing a 1BR there might be even better options for you. Just something to consider.

There is a DQ but you are probably going to need to go to Dubuque proper to find a hotel.

We've been to Key West 3 times. Stayed at La Concha twice and stayed at the Doubletree for our wedding. We vastly preferred La Concha as it's towards the middle of Duval so everything was really easy to get to.
I'd also have to recommend Mr. Z's, their cheesesteaks are amazing and our group that likes coffee loved Cuban Coffee Queen.

I can't wait to go visit Dry Tortugas National Park in the Keys as part of our National Park tour.
We VRBO'd it. Had a nice cottage we called our own for the stay. Small house, parking was a disaster but the house served it's purpose.

In my opinion- to each their own, you spend your money I'll spend mine. Key West is something I'm glad I did. Crossed it off the list. Can't say I'll make it a destination for another trip. But if I find myself in Key West again, it will be because I'm getting on the boat that takes me to the Dry Tortugas. We are huge National Park buffs in our house, and Dry Tortugas were great. The boat ride their was worth the admission itself, the tour was phenomenal and then the swimming out in the middle of nowhere was extremely memorable.

If my life's travels ever find me back down in the keys I would stay in Marathon and drive into Key West. Park the car once because you'll never get a better parking spot then the one you are already in. I would also take the time to walk the "Old and Closed off" 7 mile bridge because...... well it's neat and you are there to see stuff so you might as well see it. It's fun to talk to the fisherman fishing off it. It's worth the time and experience.

We stayed at a campground on Stock Island, Boyds. It was like a 10 minute moped ride from Duvall. And yes, I would recommend renting mopeds to get around.

Truman Hotel is the place we are staying. Dry Tortugas for a day trip and a (I think its corny) shark feeding boat ride. The other 4 days are up to us. We have friends that said a latitudes dinner is a sunset must see or breakfast. It could be cloudy reservations for a sunset might be risky! That is what keeps me from getting reservations. Any feedback or ideas are appreciated.

We have ISU friends down there right now! Let me know what you did on Dry Tortugas.
Dry Tortugas was incredible. Highly recommend the sea plane as it made the the in journey even more special(see turtles, sharks, dolphins, sea wrecks, etc). I saw numerous people on island that took the ferry and they looked terrible, rough day(windy/rough sea). The fort is amazing to see, crazy history and the snorkeling/swimming around the fort is probably the best in NA.

The Air Line Motel appears to be in Key West and gets pretty good reviews. Has an attached bar (Airline Inn) and is just a short walk from Casey's and the aforementioned DQ.
Also host to the motel Ray and Terrance stayed when traveling back to Iowa in Field of Dreams.

Who did you book for the sea plane and how long was the flight? I'd love to try that.

The Marquesa is a reallly nice hotel on keywest. I stayed there many many years ago, and it was beautiful. Pretty pricey, but great service and a nice oasis of quiet and relaxation from the tourist stuff of duval and the rest. The Truman Hotel looks nice as well. If you have a chance post a little review once you get back. Cheers

Just got home at 1:30 today its crap to come home to this.
Flew to Miami drove Hiway 1 down. Will never do that again. They lost a piece of luggage for 2 hours didnt get to leave Miami until about 2 o clock. The ocean views were awesome but a small percentage of that drive is ocean view.
Truman Hotel beautiful setting and well kept. We just dint spend much time there. Margaritas at the Green Parrot. Those were the first ones off the top of my head.
Viva was our favorite atmosphere. We had dinner there twice. Sloppy Joes was unique. Sintzes (sp) Burritos were awsome one dinner and one lunch. Hogs Breath had the biggest chicken wings I had seen in years and they were good. Went out and watched lemon sharks get fed fish on a rope. That was a unique experience. Fort Zacchary Taylor was really neat as was the sunset on Mallory Square and all of the hubub going on.

Dry Tortugas-do it. We couldn't snorkel because of the rough seas and lack of clarity. What an isolated place and so much history. The crew on the boat were amazing and they made good martinis or we were in the mood after a long day. I don't think under 12 years old would get much out of Dry Tortugas. There were a dozen or so along, I think they would have been more entertained at Disneyland or a nice beach or pool and have more fun. Those that love the beach and history it is a must see.
