Yes there’s a Pizza Hut on a lake.
Oh no, it actually closed. Here’s what it looked like View attachment 127379
HAHA! Thanks @Cfinnerty16 for taking me back in time. That’s definitely it and very underwhelming now that I see it as an adult but a Pizza Hut buffet on a lake was the ultimate dream as a kid growing up in the 90’s. Especially if you could go to Blockbuster after and pick up some movies.

Simpler times I guess.

So is it still true most shops close for meditation time in the afternoon? 4 years ago I believe that was still the case.

We went out drinking at the only big bar in town. They had kombucha on tap. Lots of people who didn’t use deodorant too lol

A few of the MUI faithful might but not many close to meditate. Fairfield is a really nice town to drive around, lots of old Victorian Style homes, many have been fixed up, but some are not looking too good anymore. Walk around the square which has most of the buildings being used, lots of places to eat. Drive up highway one, drive through the campus and then continue up highway one see all the businesses and homes out that way.
If I had to choose a town to live in the 2nd tier of counties, Fairfield would be at the top of the list, always liked going there. It's the dividing line between deciding if you go to Iowa City or Des Moines to shop. Fairfield east goes to IC, Ottumwa west go to DM.

Small towns are a lot like families. They can have idiosyncratic practices/dynamics that seem totally normal from within, but odd from an outsider perspective.

Pella reminds me of a story that bounced around the internet a few years ago.

If you grow up recycling your cereal milk in a communal carton you won’t have any idea how repulsive others find it unless you step out and gain perspective.
Is that really a thing or is this just some kind of intellectual narrative that goes way over my tiny-brained head?

I think I get so triggered because I lived and worked in Council Bluffs for 7 years. Its actually quite a neat community, but a largely outdated view of the place has hampered many attempts to make the community even better.

Last time I was there there were a ton of homeless people wondering around. Surprised me.

Council Bluffs has advantages over Des Moines due to being part of a larger metro area. Carter Lake though, that’s the area that brings a bad rap.

Yeah, but Des Moines doesn't have Council Bluffs connected to it. And it's a lot closer to Ames.

Not to mention it always ends up about towns with meat processing plants and/or high immigrant population.
And it’s easy for people when their town isn’t the one getting brought up. I think plenty of people find it less fun when it’s their town being called terrible and they’re being called terrible (since those two things go hand in hand in these threads)

I know that I'm weird but I enjoy Fort Dodge being brought up in these threads. It makes me feel like I survived growing up in the City of God instead of in a supportive upper middle-class household.

Denison used to be absolutely awful, last time I was through there it at least looked like they had cleaned up a lot of the store fronts along the highway.

Fort Dodge gets my vote. Played them in football and might’ve been the most racist team I ever played against based on their trash talk. They also didn’t appreciate me calling them “cousin boning hicks” which makes me think they’re not very tolerant of alternative view points.

Jcyclone, I must apologize in advance. This story might be a work of fiction. Regardless, it is potentially traumatizing to those of weak stomach.

The following is one version I saw:

Early 1990’s: When I was a kid, I slept over at a buddy’s house for the first time.

The next morning we woke up and his mom made us cereal, the milk tasted hella sweet, even for my child taste buds. Something about it all seemed off. Just as my buddy finished his bowl of cereal, his mom came over and turned the bowl on its side to pour the leftover milk from the cereal bowl into a milk carton. The mom then did the same with hers. I felt my face turn red with shame and embarrassment and my stomach turn. Horrified and confused I asked “what is that? What are y’all doing?”

He turned to me and deada** said “that’s our cereal milk”

Turned out this sadistic f**k and his ENTIRE family poured all of the leftover milk from each bowl of cereal back into a separate milk carton, specifically for cereal. I drank this entire family’s backwash.

F**king CEREAL MILK. Used. Cereal. Milk. ‘

I’m a little surprised my hometown hasn’t made an appearance. Or at least if it did I missed it.

That said, some of the common ones here I either have a family connection to or spent considerable time in. They’re among my favorite towns in Iowa.

Fort Dodge is rough in many spots. Their saving grace is they have a Taco Tico.

Webster City is pretty bleak.

In Ottumwa, you will never see as many adult males riding BMX bikes and grandmas with bad tatoos as you do there. I agree the area around Indian Hills probably knocks them out of contention for worst city.

Keokuk is also really bleak. It is difficult to find the "nice" part of town there.

Clinton is a little tough but it is sort of like Ottumwa. It has a couple decent neighborhoods that would knock it out of contention.

The best part of Marshalltown is around their high school and the block or so around the Flying Elbow restaurant. The rest of town seems a little rough.

Davenport seems like it has really fallen off. Collapsing apartment complexes did nothing to help its perception either.

A couple other notes, Gary, Indiana is a crime ridden $hit box and easily the worst city in Indiana. I had a sales manager plan a sales meeting there at one of the casinos. We were specifically told by the casino staff not to walk outside.

Cairo, IL is possibly one of the saddest towns/cities in America. I spent a fair bit of time there while in college in the late 1990's. My boss had pretty simple instructions, get in and get out. Note, it is pronounced Kay-Roe, not Kie-Roe like the city in Egypt.
"The best part of Marshalltown is around their high school and the block or so around the Flying Elbow restaurant." Nope

"The rest of town seems a little rough." Nope

Everyone loves Cumming.
Every time I drive south to KC for the Big 12 tournament, I always tell my friends that I was really close to Cumming before I made it to the hotel.

Fort Dodge. It's just.....bleak. Just sadness. I don't know if Ottumwa and Keokuk are big enough to qualify as cities. Oelwein certainly isn't.

Anybody saying Waterloo hasn't been there in the last 10 years. Growing like crazy to the south and all the development Downtown is paying off big time. Same with Mason City, there's some really neat stuff up there and they've really embraced Meredith Wilson and The Music Man which is pretty cool. Shout out Fat Hill Brewery too.
Waterloo has one of the best hole in the wall restaurants in a very suspect area.... The Hickory House. Outstanding ribs.

One of the towns I grew up in has made a few appearances in this thread. I can't say as I'm surprised or offended. Of course I haven't been back there in at least a decade and probably less than a handful of times in the last 25 years.
