So if a team said they are leaving after this season........

They would most likely have to pay back 90% of last year's revenue and lose out on 90% of this coming year's revenue. Am I reading that correctly?

That's a hefty chunk of $.

For exp. Nebraska earned $9.1M in 2007. (let's assume it stays constant through 2010) 2009 Rev. 9.1 * .9 = Payback of $8.19M 2010 Rev. 9.1 * .9 = Payback of $8.19M.

Therefore, if Nebbie came out today and said they will join the Big 10 in 2011, they would owe $16.4M apx.

I wonder what the ability to pull money back from last year's pay out would be?

I would think 4 teams would stand together if the rest wanted to bolt. They would be standing to gain an apx. $131.2M windfall (NU's payout * 8) only to be divided by 4 teams.

That comes out to $32.8M per school, which is also close to 4 & 1/2 years of current Big 12 rev. payouts ISU received.

I hope ISU, KU, KSU, & CU/Baylor take note.

This does bring up an interesting point.

If you have ISU, KU, KSU, Baylor as the remaining parties, you have $72M to split between the 4. (is that really possible?)

Texas would find a way to take $71.9M of that on their way out the door. Beebe would see to that.

And speaking of Beebe, why has his body not turned up in a burlap bag somewhere in rural Kansas yet? Christ.

If I've done my math right, with that $32.8M we could:

  1. Bowl in south endzone - very intimidating to the previously-MWC teams
  2. throw party with remaining funds

This has all the smell of ending up in an ugly lawsuit.

You have to have 6 teams left according to rules drawn up. 4 teams means no conference and nobody owes anybody anything.

Good call.

If that's true, keeping in mind we can't negotiate our TV deals for another year (or 4 for the ABC one I believe), we should make sure we have at least the 6 teams to keep the conference from dissolving, but then keep it at that number: we'll double the TV revenue per team!!

32 million + double TV revenue = next year looking AWESOME

man, why didn't these guys leave years ago

Which is probably why the current goat rodeo of posturing is taking place.

Nobody wants to be the first to pull the trigger because they'll owe apx. $16M. If only 6 pull the trigger, that's still a boat load for the remaining 6.

Even if 6 schools is the required minimum, I have to believe there is some sort of clause protecting/compensating the schools that aren't leaving.

I believe that is correct, yes. It is outlined that the departing school would have to pay if enough revenue can be withheld, that's all outlined in the bylaws.

Where are you seeing this? I can't seem to find this anywhere in the Big 12 By-laws, and I don't know what else would have any authority in this matter.

I've never seen this. You need nine votes to do anything in the B12.
