Why do the 2000's suck so much with music? The songs from any other decade are still great to listen to, but there are very few songs from ealier this decade that I would really want to listen to. Except of course some Foo Fighters

A lot of this just depends on how deep you're willing to dig. If you check out the indie scene in almost every genre (rock, hip hop/rap, etc.), you'll find some phenomenal acts. Kings of Leon were mentioned in this thread - they're a great example. They're a raw, scuzzy-sounding throwback band that's starting to get some cred - and their old stuff is better than the new. If you like hip-hop, try the Cool Kids. All you have to do is look a little deeper.

On that note... while I enjoy Foo Fighters, they are absolutely nothing extraordinary. Dave Grohl is so talented, but if one of your biggest songs ("Learning to Fly") was used as the theme song for "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch," you're a long ways from the anti-establishment band that started your career. I wish they'd go back to when they first started and were offbeat/bizarre - now it just seems so mass-produced and personality-free.

50's - "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash
60's - "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan
70's - "The Carpet Crawlers" by Genesis
80's - "Prayers For Rain" by The Cure
90's - "Seasons In The Abyss" by Slayer
00's - "The Scientist" by Coldplay
My musical tastes tend to be all over the place!

If you look at songs still played today...

50's- "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash or "Johnny Be Good" by Chuck Berry
60's- "Like a Rolling Stone" By Bob Dylan
70's- "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond or "American Pie" By Don McLean
80's- "Jack And Diane" by John Cougar Mellencamp or maybe "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi
90's- "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks...or 'The Dance" by Garth Brooks Everyone knows these songs. Plus, he sold by far the most records in the 90's and it's not even close
00's- Can't decide yet. Probably not for another 5 to 10 years.

When looking at best songs from each decade. I think the ones that have staying power that are still played everywhere, or songs that everyone knows should be considered. Not just where it was on the charts.

I gotta be honest... I don't know 3/4 of the songs you guys listed from the 80's 90's and 00's. In my opinion that doesn't make it "the best song".

Why in every music thread do people bash on 00's music? If you do some searching and don't listen too KISS 107 FM its just as good as any other decade.

For 90's I would throw in "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer.

That is a great list. I take exception to "The Logical Song" by Supertramp. I think the album Breakfast In America is when they sold out. In fact, I would list "Bloody Well Right" as the best song of the 70's.

I'm surprised there are no Beatles songs listed here for the 60's or Queen for the 70's. Fat Bottomed Girls anyone? Jethro Tull is maybe the greatest composer of all time, rivaled only by Van Morrison IMO.

"Bloody Well Right" can be heard at the following:

For the 00's - my favorite song of the decade is "They Don't Want Music" by the Black Eyed Peas.

Nostalgia mostly. People tend to like the decade they grew up in and all good music grows on you with time. Undoubtedly in 5-10 years there will be some songs from the early 2000's you love to hear.

Too many great individual songs to choose from. How about best albums?

60's...Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles. No contest.
70's... Tie between Who's Next, The Who, and Rocks, Aerosmith.
80's... Kick, INXS, a personal favorite.

Anything beyond the 80's, I'm probably not qualified to judge..

The 70s were, without a doubt, the best decade for music.
