Most outsiders would probably tell you that ISU far exceeded expectations. There were certainly ISU fans who thought 5 or 6 wins was possible, but most national pundits didn't have ISU pegged to do much better than last season.

I saw at least 2 that said we could squeak into a bowl game and that is exactly what we did.

Again...love the coaches, love the team. But we are a win or two away from CPR having serious consideration for this award.

No way you can deny Mack this award. PR did a great job, but I just can't see giving the award to a coach who had a losing record in conference. I just don't see how you can do that.

Agreed. If we had beaten KSU, KU, A&M or Mizzu - just one of those...and I'd likely feel a bit different. As is, Rhoads did a great job but it's tough to get it to a 6-6 (3-5) team.

I would say a 6-6 Iowa State team with a new head coach has far exceeded expectations this year. Most pundits had us at 2-10 or 3-9...a lot not even giving us a Big 12 game! Look at the streak:

2006: 4-8
2007: 3-9
2008: 2-10
and then jump to...
2009: 6-6

...that is a major accomplishment for a team to seemingly be in a downward spiral for the cellar.

I don't mind if Mack gets it, but seriously, his team is stacked with talent. What would make me angry though is if Snyder ends up with it.

My prediction the list is most likely close to:
1. Brown
2. Rhoads
2. Pelini
3. Gundy
3. Snyder

I agree, Snyder shouldn't get it. His team has won one more game than last year and didn't accomplish anything note worthy. No Big 12 North, no bowl, and four conference wins over 4 of the the 5 worse teams in the Big 12.

I can deny Mack the award. They finish No. 1 in recruiting in the conference a year in advance each season. If they are NOT in the Big12 championship each year there is something wrong. If they lose more than 1 or two games there is something wrong. I'd say winning 10 or 11 games each year is not an accomplishment for Mack considering he has the most talent, top to bottom, than any team in the conference.

I can see Pelini getting it before Mack Brown. Can also see our guy getting it ahead of either.

Texas has a lot of built in advantages but that doesn't mean any monkey could go 12-0 as their coach. If it did, David McWilliams or John Mackovic would have won just as much as Mack Brown has.

I don't think PR gets it, but I really don't think any other coach in the big 12 could have done what he did this year. just imagine what he could do at texas/oklahoma and with their players. OU having the year they are with or with out the injuries is really embarrassing. Stoop's days are numbered.

You've never spoken truer words. Mack Brown is a helluva coach....the dude went 20-3 his last two years at North Carolina for god's sakes. Seems like a portion of our fanbase doesn't know good coaching when they see it alot of times.

I tend to agree.

However, where was Texas expected to and predicted to finish in the Big 12 compared to ISU? Texas lived up to the expectations and predictions.

Iowa State -- under Rhoads -- EXCEEDED expectations and predictions.

Does that make Rhoads a better candidate for Big 12 COY than Brown? Or vice versa?

Just like everything else in the Big Texas 12? Right? The Golden Rule . . He who has the gold . . Rules.

By your evaluation . . Brown should win it every year. Won't that be great for the sport and the Big "T" XII.

Mute point now. Mack Brown was named Big 12 COY. There is a thread started in the Big XII forum.

Sorry Clone fans. Props to Rhoads for a very good season.

GAME OF THE YEAR (Conference): Missouri 41 Kansas 39. Two rich and arrogant schools playing for bragging rights in the Big 12 North's cultural hub (KC) to the tune of more than 1,100 total yards? We'll take it. Call it the “Bo Beat Us” Bowl from this point forward.

Absolutely true. We were nearly a unanimous choice for dead last in the conference but I keep going back to the point someone made about CPR having a losing conf record; I think it's pretty difficult to vote for someone w/o a winning record.

But yeah, the distance CPR brought ISU is so much further than MB at UT. I think (at least from talking to some Iowa, NU, UT and KSU fans) what Paul has earned is more valuable than an award...respect.
