Most outsiders would probably tell you that ISU far exceeded expectations. There were certainly ISU fans who thought 5 or 6 wins was possible, but most national pundits didn't have ISU pegged to do much better than last season.
When has it been worse?
No way you can deny Mack this award. PR did a great job, but I just can't see giving the award to a coach who had a losing record in conference. I just don't see how you can do that.
2004 (2005 wasn't much better) and a ISU coach won it that year with a 6-6 record. I will say however, we did not finish the year strong which is going to be the big hiccup.
I would say a 6-6 Iowa State team with a new head coach has far exceeded expectations this year. Most pundits had us at 2-10 or 3-9...a lot not even giving us a Big 12 game! Look at the streak:
2006: 4-8
2007: 3-9
2008: 2-10
and then jump to...
2009: 6-6
...that is a major accomplishment for a team to seemingly be in a downward spiral for the cellar.
I don't mind if Mack gets it, but seriously, his team is stacked with talent. What would make me angry though is if Snyder ends up with it.
My prediction the list is most likely close to:
1. Brown
2. Rhoads
2. Pelini
3. Gundy
3. Snyder
Mack Brown by a landslide IMO.

I can deny Mack the award. They finish No. 1 in recruiting in the conference a year in advance each season. If they are NOT in the Big12 championship each year there is something wrong. If they lose more than 1 or two games there is something wrong.
For what it's worth, Husker Locker, a Nebraska website has picked Paul Rhoades as its Big 12 Coach-of-the-Year.

You've never spoken truer words. Mack Brown is a helluva coach....the dude went 20-3 his last two years at North Carolina for god's sakes. Seems like a portion of our fanbase doesn't know good coaching when they see it alot of times.Texas has a lot of built in advantages but that doesn't mean any monkey could go 12-0 as their coach. If it did, David McWilliams or John Mackovic would have won just as much as Mack Brown has.
I don't think PR gets it, but I really don't think any other coach in the big 12 could have done what he did this year. just imagine what he could do at texas/oklahoma and with their players. OU having the year they are with or with out the injuries is really embarrassing. Stoop's days are numbered.

Just like everything else in the Big Texas 12? Right? The Golden Rule . . He who has the gold . . Rules.
By your evaluation . . Brown should win it every year. Won't that be great for the sport and the Big "T" XII.
HuskerLocker said:GAME OF THE YEAR (Conference): Missouri 41 Kansas 39. Two rich and arrogant schools playing for bragging rights in the Big 12 North's cultural hub (KC) to the tune of more than 1,100 total yards? We'll take it. Call it the “Bo Beat Us” Bowl from this point forward.
I tend to agree.
However, where was Texas expected to and predicted to finish in the Big 12 compared to ISU? Texas lived up to the expectations and predictions.
Iowa State -- under Rhoads -- EXCEEDED expectations and predictions.
Does that make Rhoads a better candidate for Big 12 COY than Brown? Or vice versa?
