You've never spoken truer words. Mack Brown is a helluva coach....the dude went 20-3 his last two years at North Carolina for god's sakes. Seems like a portion of our fanbase doesn't know good coaching when they see it alot of times.
It does take a great coach to manage talent. Mack Brown has done that well recently. Ron Zook is an example of a coach who can recruit the talent, but whose teams underperform for their talent level. Brown himself was accused of not being able to coach talent early in his tenure at UT until he finally got to a BCS bowl in 2004 (Rose Bowl).
However, with 12 years at UT he is at a point where his system in clearly established. He has the talent available to be able to replace starters easily every year. He should be expected to make a BCA bowl or the NC every year.
Compare that to what CPR and staff have accomplished. CPR is not only in his first year at ISU, but his first year as a head coach. To even have a chance at a bowl game with this team, in that situation, is saying something.
CPR first had to do everything he could to finish of his first recruiting season while trying to put together a solid coaching staff. Then he had to wait until spring practice to find out what he really had on the team. There was also a period of adjustment where they had to install the new offensive and defensive schemes. The staff then had to wait until fall to see how the new recruits would fit into the team and work on how they wanted to tackle the 2009 season. CPR then hit the ground running and showed a lot less of the confusion that we had seen with the previous staff as far as calling plays, making adjustments, and general gameday coaching. Through out the season the staff dealt with players adjusting to the new system, and a plethora of injuries. When AA went down and missed the time he did, I honestly expected the team to go in the tank and lose the rest of the games of the season. They obviously didn't. CPR went into Memorial stadium with his backup QB and running back. His team, and a defense which was one of the worst in the country in 2008, won that game.
CPR accomplished more in his first season than our previous coach could accomplish in two seasons.
I honestly think CPR has accomplished more than Mack Brown has this year.
Now, I'm not saying that Mack Browns job is easy. Just ask Bob Stoops how easy it is to reload every year and handle adversity, despite having great talent. If Texas had to overcome some great amount of adversity this year I would give him a lot more credit. The only adversity that I think UT has faced has been coming out flat against some lesser opponents and the lack of a solid running game. They have only had 3 games where they beat there oponent by 10 points or less.
