Choosing a Blue-Ray Player

So has anybody had any luck with blue-ray players other than ps3?

Blu-ray was invented by Sony&Pioneer. Look no further than the company that brought it to market...Sony. (FYI: I don't own one but it just makes sence to me)

We have this model (bought it last year at this time for $200)...works great. It's discontinued now, but you can find it on other reseller sites I think.

This was my logic. I bought the Sony N460. Good picture but don't know that I can see much of a difference between my old upscaling DVD player and the Blu-Ray player on my 46" Sony LCD. On the N460 upscaled DVD's look pretty much the same as the Blu-Rays.

There are some good opportunities to upgrade movies. For instance last week I bought both Gladiator and Braveheart for $10 and since I had the DVD I will get a $10 rebate making each free. Get a $1 when I resell the old DVD's and they are paying me to switch my movie collection.

Ha...or you could get that model from last year marked down from the extremely marked up $499...down to $332. :biglaugh:

Some people look at this differently. However, there is without a doubt a huge difference between an upscaled DVD and a Blu Ray DVD - in both video and audio. You are the first person that I've heard/read say the difference is small or not noticeable.

Could be the connection?

Tom - how is your Blu Ray player connected to your TV? If not via HDMI cable, that's likely your issue. Also, what is the model number on your Sony TV?

I haven't read the thread, but I have a Samsung BD-P1600 and don't have any major complaints except that it does not have wireless internet. I use it to stream Pandora, but haven't tested the other streaming services (netflix, blockbuster, youtube). Its worth considering, although if I had the choice now I would probably get a PS3. PS3's were $100 more when I originally bought the player.

i've got a PS3 and love to play bluray on my 52", but i only own 6 blurays i think. the 5 that came with the ps3 and one i asked for christmas last year. i don't want to pay $25+ for a movie.

You can find plenty of Blu-ray movies for less than $15 if you look for them. Amazon frequently (especially this time of year) has great deals.

Yup. On Friday, we got 6 new releases (all this year) on Amazon for less than $100.

I hate sony with a passion, but if I end up getting into blu-ray Ill get a ps3. The main feature I would want on a player is netflix, etc, mainly for an entertainment center upstairs. A PS3 fits the bill since other NF capable players are 200 and up anyway.

With the PS3 if you are set up on a home network (wired or wireless) the PS3 can detect any media you want it to off of any computer hooked up to the network. So then you can use it to view pics on you TV our you could also play any digital movies you have saved on your computer hard drive. You could also play any MP3 and other music files on your computer hard drive through your home theater system as well. For instance, my theater setup is in the basement and my main computer and router are in a bedroom upstairs but if I am downstairs dinking around I can play my mp3's downstairs over my system. Pretty sweet really.

I have a PS3, Can you explain how to set up my Ps3 to do the bolded part? It states access to the media server isn't allowed. I need to register my ps3 to my computer?

Same here. I've had so many problems with Sony crap I'd never buy another Sony product except I really want something to stream Netflix and a blu-ray player. Might as well get the games too.
