The worst place where you have lived?

I spent a couple summer months in Muskogee, OK auditing a scrap metal company whose blast furnace had exploded. They had taken over an old, abandoned, run-down grocery store as their headquarters after the blast destroyed their old offices (and a number of houses near the yard). Abandoned grocery store + no air conditioning + neighbors ****** about their houses being blown up + Muskogee, OK = worst summer of my life.
I remember a bbq joint (Slicks?) that was out of the world great. That bbq joint would be reason alone to keep Muskogee off the worst places listing.

412 Hayward Ave. Ames Iowa. that place was a *********. great times had by all, but an absolute ********. we let a homeless man sleep on our porch, kept a years worth of garbage in the garage, and had a resident groundsquirrel that would eat french fries off the floor.

Ottumwa, Ia. Nuff said I win. The place is a hole and smells like feet. My parents still live there so I have to suck it up and go visit every so often.

Did we see civilization in New Mexico on the way there? At least the way back we were on 40.

If by "signs of life" you mean "5th wheelers permenatly parked 50 yards off of the interstate" and a "Border check point" then yes

Otherwise no

Oh wait you said signs of civilization... well I *SUPPOSE* there were the power lines and the railroad track following parallel to I-40, otherwise no. None what-so-ever

That was my buddy Joe. He would frequently try to walk back to Sterling Apartments from Campustown, and sleep on various porches/driveways along Hayward.

1) Marshalltown, Iowa
2) Pocatello, Idaho (Worked a contract job there for awhile)
3) Torrance, CA (Same contract 1 mo. there)
4) Basalt, CO (Cheaper than living IN Aspen)
5) Aspen, CO (I don't ski or do do drugs)

I currently work in Denver but live in the 'burbs. Denver, proper, is a nice place to visit..wouldn't want to live there though.

I have to take offense.

Nebraska taxes are slightly high but the City of Omahas are not really.

The streets arent much different than any city of this size.

Downtown and midtown have had a tremendous amount of reinvestment and this continues to be the case, both public and private.

Crime does stink in the hood. Dont live there.

I really only have Des Moines as a comparison, so take it FWIW. With the exception of the Old Market and the Zoo, Des Moines is better than Omaha in almost every way imaginable.

Upon further review: Helser hall. What a craphole. When they told us it was closing at the end of the year (2004) i thought that was a great thing. Too bad they didnt end up knocking it down..

I agree, Helser was terrible. I lived there from January 04 - March 04. We moved out as soon as we found an opening in MWL.

Ottumwa is great place to live... I loved it there!!!! It has changed so much since I lived there though. It used to be peaceful quiet town. Looks run down quite a bit in past 10 years.

Helser was awesome from 1998-2001 when I lived there. I lived in same exact room for three years. Terrible male/female ratio though. Def big time sausage fest.

this thread is great.

we all complain about recruiting...and yet 50-75% of the answers to "worst place you have ever lived" is either 1) someplace in Iowa or 2) on campus! and we wonder why so many kids don't want to come here....haha.
