I just got off the phone with Melvin Ejim. He is taking the wait and see approach.

He did tell me that if T.J Otzelberger is retained, he'd say in Ames for sure. If it is anybody else, he'd consider that and other options. I'll have a full story up shortly.

Good deal, I want Ejim to stay bad, even if he is one of GMac's recruits. Kid looks fantastic.

If anybody hadn't figured it out already coach Otz is the real deal. He's the one bringing in the big name players and he's the one they play hard for. He has the relationships with the players that Mac was never able to achieve.

But Otz also has been here for the past 4 years. He should certainly get a great raise to stay - but in no way is he HC material right now. Not to mention he wouldn't play any different of style and that is one of the things we need.

CW gets mad props from me for his coverage on this situation. Hell of a job that last 24 hours my friend...

I respect your opinion Jeremy but you do not know what style of play he'll go with. Neither do I. Nobody does!

Fair enough, that is very true. I really like the guy and think he can be the difference between a quick rebuild and a no-go, but I don't think he's HC material at this point. Certainly worthy of twice his pay to get him to stay though.

I agree with this. If possible he should be in line for the first assistant position and should be paid accordingly. I would think that if we brought in an assistant from somewhere else he would get a look.

Jeremy-How do you feel about Nurse as a head coach? I know he doesn't have the college experience but he has very extensive experience and success at pretty high levels. Let's say if we could have Otz, Grayer and Nurse would you be in favor of him. I would say that for Nurse to be our head coach, Otz would need to stay. he would need the connection help. I just really think that the high caliber prospects would be drawn to a guy that has 20 years experience in getting guys ready for the next level.

I think Nurse is a great x an o kind of guy, a great "coach". I question his recruiting abilities, but that isn't really the critical need for the HC. But, he doesn't have any name recognition and even if your HC doesn't need to recruit, his name has to be at the very least recruitable.

I think he could be a great fall-back guy, but certainly 3rd or 4th on my wish list. Regardless, I think JP knows this hire is make or break on us remaining a basketball school and it's going to take 1.2 mil or so to get a decent coach, otherwise it's strictly risk vs reward on taking a shot at somebody like Nurse.

I wouldn't be upset with Nurse getting the job, but it would be a great disservice if JP didn't have a couple higher profile candidates interviewed as well. We know we can get Nurse, we have to shoot higher though.

Nurse is the man and bump TJ's salary to keep him on. Grayer could be retained as well.

Nurse brings one more recruiter in and we are full steam ahead.

If I were king for a day, I would keep Otz, Nurse, and Grayer together and tell the incoming coach to give them a shot for a couple of years and see how it goes and use some of that $800k for retention. I think the recruit class is worth keeping with the right bball system. We just had a system that did not work in the Big 12. I would pursue CC and Hamm if they were interested. The next round of major moves would then be the head coach in the next year or two. A real coach could make this work. I would think Rutter would also want to go to CU with Doug. This could work better than spraying the empty cupboard with Lysol trying to find the mites.

Thats kind of how I feel. When I think about what you look for in a head coach I want to see game ability. I want him to create schemes be an on the court guy. Let him do that and have other take care of the bulk of recruiting.

As far as name recognition-I don't really know if it is needed. I don't believe that a lot of the kids we go after are familiar with the guys we may hire. I think there are a certain few coaches who have real name recognition. In the end I feel that if you say your HC spent twenty years developing Pro talent, then you can offset the name recognition deal. I don't know that he should be our first choice but I would certainly have him in the top 3-4.

When the fanbase has been pushing for a change, and it finally happens... you go and make his friend HC and keep his assistants? Yeah, thatll fly...

If he had such a great relationship with the players then why was it such a big suprise to the coaching staff when some of these kids left?

I have a hard time with a recruiting process that results in kids playing for a school because of an assitant coach.
