If he had such a great relationship with the players then why was it such a big suprise to the coaching staff when some of these kids left?

I have a hard time with a recruiting process that results in kids playing for a school because of an assitant coach.

That's a real valid question. There was always a relationship problem in there somewhere, and the staff never did seem to be tuned into the departures.

Would Nurse have even been a candidate before last week? No.

Otz was just quoted a few days ago with saying he owes all he has to Mac(i'm paraphrasing of course), Mac knows he's his best recruiter, how do we know he wont be going with Mac, unless he is under contract here?

I love Otz, he's gotten us our top talent the last 4 years, I really hope he stays and gets a chunk of McD's buyout.

OK, well we have a recruit who seems to be hinged on Otz, there are rumors that players may come back since Mac has left.

Hiring to keep recruits is why we're in this boat in the first place. Just saying.

I'm not opposed to keeping Otz around by any stretch, but if we have a really quality, solid guy lined up and he says "No Otz. I'm bringing my guys in", I don't want it to be a sticking point. If the new guy is fine with it, GREAT.

I may be mistaken....but the main reason we hired Wayne Morgan was to keep incoming recruits....right? Clean house!

This is pretty much where i'm at.

Hire the new guy. Then trust the new guy to do his job, which includes managing assistants and recruits. If you dont trust him to do his job, why did you hire him?

Another line of thought - if we hire the right guy, it doesn't matter if there are short term recruiting losses by losing a guy like TJ. Obviously his ties in certain areas are very valuable, but the right hire can offset that in the 2-3 year range. But certainly I agree that keeping TJ should be a high priority - but certainly not as HC.

Hire a head coach and let him bring his own guys in, interview existing if he chooses. It is his choice, he's the one to accountable for the program.

I believe he would have been.

I like his excitement, his passion, it just oozes from him. Check his first interview on cyclones.com. He showed more passion and excitement in that interview than mac ever did. I just like the fact that nurse actually has a personality unlike coach mac.

It worked for Kansas State. And all Martin had was high school experience

If we cannot get a star coach, I would be fine with Nurse with a lower $$ than Mac, and giving TJ a salary bump. Perhaps a 4-5 year contract with a low buyout, so that if we do not show improvement in the next 2 years, and a name coach is available, then a switch can be done, say during March, instead of April-May time frame. If the program turns around, we can always increase the $$ with an extension.

Do we think that it would be possible for Pollard to name an interim head coach for the coming season, due to how late in the game GMac left?
