no expert here, but I did a Triathlon a few years back. Plan to do more, but my achilles has been acting up. Only advice I have is wear a wetsuit. Also, no one wears speedos. Spare yourself that humiliation. I didn't. It's really not that hard outside of swimming. So if you are prepared for that it is all really downhill after that.

Crap- Now I have to buy a different swim suit. :jimlad:

Somewhere in here I mentioned that I was in the CLYDESDALE div so speedos are not an option. The wife wouldnt let me out of the house. I have the spandex short to swim in and let me just say that they are not flattering.

Its been fun seeing his (your son in law if we're talking about the same person) success! I've raced against him on a bike a few times the last month or two, which hasn't been fun:)

Doing my first tri this year. Does anyone have any advice on what to wear? I'm leaning towards a tri suit but not sure if it really worth the $100+. I thought of doing the speedo and then tank top but then I would have to kick my own ***. I'd rather not do the trunks not because of the drag in the water but concerned about the chafing.

bosco- Its my first tri this year as well. I just went with the swim shorts TYR brand I think. they are skin tight but at least full length. Still not flattering but they do reduce the drag a lot vs just trunks or board shorts. I found it hard to find trunks without pockets and all that other jazz that will just make it harder to swim.

The shorts have some support in the front and I plan to just wear them under my bike shorts and then throw on a pair of gym shorts after the bike to minimize any embarrasment that hasnt already occured.

I all seriousness consider something like this as you can wear it for all three sports:
Zoot Men's Ultra Racesuit Men's Triathlon

Thanks for the info Cyko and Jmb.

JMB-I've been looking at suits like these. Excuse my niavete but am I to assume all of the "tri suits" can be worn for all 3 events even if it specifically doesn't say so in the description?
YES!

My favorite is Louis Garnaue as they seem like the best fabric...and great for cycling-plus have a compression component. LG runs a bit smaller than other brands so if you are a medium go with large etc.

He has been doing some bike races to get ready for the season. This will be his first season as a pro. He is going to Mexico this weekend for his first pro race. Really excited for him. Hope he does well!

Nathan White--Nick is his brother & coach. He & my daughter will be moving to to Tucson this summer so he can train 12 months a year.
Oops that is what I meant. Nick is a great guy as well.

Are there any triathlons (spring distance ones preferably) in Iowa later in the summer? I was planning on doing the pigman in june, but I hurt my knee over spring break during crew spring training and I just got done with physical therapy to fix that a couple weeks ago so I'm working on getting back in shape from that, which kind of killed any plan of doing the pigman. Anyone know of anything in late July/early August?

I would love to try a triathlon but my swimming is VERY inefficient... Anybody know of a good place in Des Moines to get some coaching on the swimming end?

Um... how does a fan site for the Cyclones not mention the Sprint Distance Tri that is put on every year by the ISU Tri club?

I say this having been a participant of the last 2 Cy-MAN tri's but not having any information about this years event. Last year it was the day after the IOWA-ISU game. Made for a great weekend of seeing friends and competing. Anyone have any info on when this years event will be??

Any of the Y's have good one-on-one coaches. I was not the best at swimming when I began as well. I'm not ashamed to admit that I used a snorkel (its legal) when I first started. I couldn't get my heart rate and breathing down before my first tri came around. So I just plunked that thing on, and barreled through the swim.
