While the seismic shifts needed to create "Super Conferences" didn't take place, many still think it's only a matter of time before massive restructuring takes place in college football. And while the Big 12 needed a last-second Hail Mary to come out alive this time, Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins revealed that it won't be the Big 12 that falls apart, as they've all signed on for 10 more years.

"We all signed an agreement that we'd be here 10 years and if some things happen -- and I think they will happen, I prefer not go into it until it does -- if some other things happen, it could be longer," Perkins told AOL FanHouse. "Right now my understanding is it's 10 years."

A ten-year commitment makes sense if you consider that the Big 12 will be negotiating a new TV deal in the near future, and you can bet that no network will back up a Brinks truck to a conference that may be in turmoil again come next offseason.

The window for radical expansion might be closed for now, if only because network partners have smartened up to the possibility that implosion is possible, and will demand some stability for their multi-millions of dollars. As hand model John Taylor mentioned earlier today, the Pac-10 is done with expansion... for now. But what could be the determining factor in all of this is the fine print in the TV contracts, as the Pac-10 has two major negotiations coming up: The improvement of their mediocre Fox Sports Net contract and the impending negotiations with a network partner -- again, likely Fox -- for the launch of the Pac-10 Network.

NOW it's all but safe to celebrate, ISU fans. Now that you don't have to worry about Texas screwing the conference in the near future, the good TV deal is looking much more realistic.

This is encouraging. Lew has announced his resignation from KU, so it's not like he has a reason to be pumping sunshine for the Big 12.

I'd be interested to know what the penalty is for breaking this agreement. If it's not significantly worse than the existing exit penalties, I wouldn't trust that this does a whole lot.

Hmmm........ adding Arkansas and Notre Dame?

Just like when a coach signs a long term contract, that means he won't leave early? I wouldn't read too much into any statement that any conference releases to the public.

I believe there is a very large penalty to the TV networks. Chip Brown sounded like this thing was basically impossible to get out of because of how rigid the contract was in favor of the TV networks.

So Texas will be holding the other conference schools hostage for another 10 years. Great!!! I think Texas played the entire college athletics community here. They scared Colorado and Nebraska out of the Big 12. Flirted with the Pac-10 enough to get the remaining Big 12 schools to let Texas have their own network, keep the TV money under the previous model, and the remaining schools gave Texas money to stay with them. I realise ISU will now bring in more revenue, but still, this all just stinks.

It appears ISU now has at least 10 years to improve its situation before the next wave of realignments. That means win baby win - especially in football.

If all of these realignment discussions had taken place in 2001 (after ISU's 9-win season in football and 32-win season in basketball), I don't think we would have had to sweat things out nearly as much.

It would have stunk more if we had to join the Mac or Missouri Valley. I think that was a real possibility if this hadn't happened.

I think the chances were better that we'd ended up in the Big East or MWC during a super-conference scramble. I'm happy we're still in the Big 12 and should get more tv money, but I wish we'd get two more teams to create north and south divisions again. Getting to bowl games and the NCAA tournament is going to be tougher now, but I think we've got the right guys to get us there.

Yeah and going to the East Coast to play all the time would have been great....

Better than the MWC, average wise... Big east isnt all east coast.

And MAC\MO valley? Man, no offense, but thats just stupid. We wouldve gone Big East, MWC, and C-USA before we'd have gone MAC... and we'd have just folded up our athletic department before going I-AA.

I think at this point that wasn't going to happen, but what better way to make people smile about bohica than making them think that.

Great now we can all forget about the elephant (Texas) in the room. It's only a matter of time until we are fighting for our lives again. I have hated the texas schools since they came in. I dont see how you can have a solid conference and not pay each school the same. The B12 is only for a few and we arnt that few. I raise my finger to the B12.

you got to admit, texas does have a point. Whos bringing all the fans in? well texas & oklahoma of course, why should they have to split it with people that perform not to their par, and therefore not raking in any cash.

big 10 is a bit different, all their schools are widely known, everyone is bringing something to the table, with the exception of northwestern, but with their high academic standing theres no way in hell anyone would think about kicking them out

Missouri and Texas A&M are still not happy. I have a feeling even with exit penilties. If they have a chance to bolt, especially Missouri then they will do it.
