The 3-4 now takes up 15 teams in the NFL and its really good at stopping the spread offense. Teams like Alabama are already running this defense and having success. With the Big 12 a passing conference I think this defense makes perfect sense.

I am aware that this defense takes a dominant nose tackle which is really hard to come by and that our defense already has a major way to go.

I am hoping in the coming years as CPR gains more recongition this would be more plausable. I do think it will be nessesary later on.

Just a thought. I know the complications of it but think it would help

Here is a rivals article talking about it

It does make sense, especially with the limited number of DL ISU seems to always have. I still will let Wally choose; he looks like he knows what he is doing, just doesn't have all the guys he needs to make a great defense.

You need to have a disruptive OLB/D end and we don't have to many of those type of guys on the roster.

I liked when we played nickel and move TB to the nickel back. We had some relative success with that last year.

That being said, I trust Wally.

Not only do you need a dominant nose tackle, but you also need a pair of large defensive ends.

I don't think that ISU has the personnel to even entertain this as our base defense.

i think we need to run whatever defense wally tells us to. he seems to be doing pretty good at it so far.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with this.

Of course it is possible that a defensive coordinator as good as Wally hasn't heard of a 3-4 and is just waiting for someone to tell him about it. :jimlad:

As stated above I realize we dont have the personnel to run it right now. I trust Wally to but that doesn't mean wally couldn't run the 3-4 later on. Obviously big personnel moves would be required but I think a few of you are missing the point I was trying to make

If you thought we didn't have enough depth at LB to run a 4-3, we certainly don't have the depth to run a 3-4...

My only hope is that Wally reads this thread so he knows that he now has approval to run the ISU defense as he choses. If he doesn't read this thread I am afraid he will be lost with what to do.

I couldn't disagree more. We need to run a 4-2-5 IMO to stop the spread. We don't have the NT or the DEs necessary to run a 3-4. We also don't have the linebackers to do it right now. Call me silly but the idea of possibly 3 soph/freshman LBs out there at the same time doesn't excite me, especially when the DL would be struggling.

We already run this frequently. It's called a nickle defense. It's not a magic bullet, nor is the 3-4. At the end of the day, you need talented players tackling the ball carrier, sacking the QB and covering receivers. Any of these defenses will get the job done, if you have the players to do it.

With Wally, the scheme isn't something I worry about. Recruiting athletes to play on the defensive side of the ball is what we need.

We are often concerned about the undersized LB we often have to use. The OLB need to be large and strong for the 3-4 to work. They essentially need to take turns taking the place of one of the big guys up front. If they can't there is nothing to stop a team from running over you.

Agree, the hardest position to recruit/sign are interior DL. With the 3-4, you need 3 of those guys. With the 4-3, you need just two. For ISU, the 4-3 is the way to go.
