You ever run across people who don't know how to do some of the most practical and simple skills in life? I guess I was lucky to have parents who taught me a wide array of skills that would come in handy in the real world. I would like to formulate a list of skills that you think EVERY person should know how to do.

I will start with
1. Change a flat tire
2. Drive a manual transmission

Agreed. Unfortunately my parents tought me nothing of the sort. I took it upon myself to learn that stuff because I was so frustrated that they werent capable. Maybe that was their intention? =)

I want all of my kids to have basic car knowledge (oil changes, replace a tire, etc) I want them all to know how to cook as well even if its just something simple.

Anymore the gender roles of old are hogwash. You cant depend on someone else all of the time anymore.

Agreed. I believe a girl should know basic car maintenance and proper use of tools found in the top of a tool box, and a guy should know basic cooking and housekeeping skills.

Must be what my Aunt was taught. She is late 50's now, divorced 3 times from rich guys and has no marketable skills for work while running out of money. The only thing she knows how to do is work out all day at the gym. Meanwhile the looks are fading and rich guys that age either want a real wife or a 20 something.

I see no need for #2 for the vast majority of people. 95% of cars (I'm guessing) come with an automatic transmission. I've made it through 34 years of life w/o having to drive one, and I plan on continuing this trend for the rest of my life. Why would I learn to do something that is utterly and completely useless to me?

I hope you don't drive a pickup truck. IMO pickup trucks w/out manual transmissions are for girls. A truck should have a stick shift in it.

A little OT:
It seems as though, kids these days are getting dumber. With the advances in technology, video games, computers, etc, they seem to lack some basic skills because everything is given to them in a different way than it was only 10-15 years ago.
I.E. I was training a 7th grade girl a while ago and asked her what time it was. Our facility only has analog clocks and this girl didn't have her cell phone near by. She said she didn't know what time it was. I said, there's a clock over there by the door. She said, Yeah, I don't know how to read those clocks. I was like wtf... She said, her school, house, car, and phone all have digital clocks. She was never taught how to read an analog clock..... wow.
