I was at work. I went outside for about five minutes, and when I came back in, the place was empty. Everyone in the building was in our conference room watching the news. I got up there in time to see the 2nd plane hit.

As far as the jumpers, out of respect for the families, I don't think they should show that. But people should know about it. I didn't know how bad that really was until I read The 9/11 Commission Report. Police were placing spotters around the building, and would give the go ahead to rescue personnel to cross- when they wouldn't be landed on by someone. That's how many were jumping.

I was in 2nd grade in Fort Dodge and remember seeing the 2nd plane hit by glancing into the teacher's lounge and the tv was right there.

I was in 3rd grade... like a lot of people, we spent the whole day watching TV, then went home and watched into the night with my parents. I remember my parents trying to explain to me what terrorism was and not understanding why guys would fly a plane into a building on purpose. Very sad day.

I was a senior in college and had a late morning class that day so I ran to the grocery store early in the morning and the lady checking out my groceries told me about it. She asked me if I was scared about what had just happened and i had no clue what she was talking about and was shocked when she told me. The professors cancelled my two classes that day so we could watch what was happening. Very tough going to football practice that afternoon. Coaches told us we needed to practice like any other day but no one's mind was on football that day.

Worst part of the day by far was hanging out with girlfriend at the time when she got the phone call that no one could get ahold of her cousin who worked at the world trade center. Best part of the day was when he could finally get through to someone and that he was OK and that he was about two blocks away when it happened.

I was in fourth grade and was in class when it happened. We had the TV on the rest of the day.

I was a freshman in college. Had been in college for just a couple weeks. I was on my way to breakfast before my first class when someone on my dorm floor asked if I saw what was going on.

I don't remember his name, but it was the only time all year I talked to him, or even saw him or his roommate all year for that matter. I don't remember any classes being canceled, but I watched tv coverage pretty much all day when I wasn't in class.

Sixth grade music class. It was a little while after it happened. Only my teacher and one other student knew about it. The student worked in the library, and they had the tv on watching it. Spent the rest of class talking about it. No one really knew what to think

I was in 11th grade at the time but was at the doctor's office (strep throat or something). I didn't know anything was going on until the nurses turned the tv from the morning kid's stuff to the news. Very surreal and sickening (in a different way than the strep). I remember just going home and sleeping off the nausea I was feeling from it all.

this is very interesting. Certain events in history cause everyone to remember where they were and what they were doing. I wonder if there is anyone who doesn't remember what they were doing.. so to speak.?

I was in sixth grade and actually didn't find out about it until almost 10 since I was in band pretty much from 9-10. Went to math and teacher had it on briefly but all the teachers followed the principals orders to keep tv's off...wish they wouldn't have.

After school I went home with my mom who worked there, tried to go get one of the special editions of the CR Gazette they made that day but all the gas station lines were to long to bother. Put the U.S. flag out at home and watched coverage most of the night except we went for a walk to get away from it all and didn't watch the presidents address.

I'm sure they were involved at some point but does anyone know if any of the F-16's out of Des Moines were used to help escort Air Force One?

That's another thing I remember about that day, the long lines at the gas station. Specifically, how I actually really needed gas and was stuck in an hour long line at the Lincoln Way and Dakota Kum and Go behind all the morons who were freaking out. I don't remember too bad of price gouging, but I'm sure some was being done in Ames that day.

I would guess not, at least for people who were old enough to comprehend what was going on.

2nd grade, getting ready for school and had the history channel on. they broke in with the news. I ran upstairs to tell my mom, she thought I was joking or mistake (i watched more history channel than any other 2nd grader ive ever met). Told her to turn it on the radio, she did. We went to school that day and got out just in time to see Air Force one flying over phenix elementary school in WDM. Rest of that day was just a blur.i remember lighting a candle along with a vigil on tv. That was a defining moment of a generation and shall never be forgotten.

Where were you, what were you doing?

Also it's sickening that they can show people jumping out of windows on the History Channel. I mean, I saw it live...I dont really need to see it again.

I was supervising a study hall at my school and the secretary came over the loudspeaker and told us to turn on our TV's. I had never seen a room of 50 HS kids sit so quiet and at attention. Some started to cry and get emotional but most just sat there and watched, some asked very excellent questions.

Driving home from the REC in the morning with a buddy. Turned on Mancow and thought it was a joke, until we got home and saw it on TV.
