Just FYI - CR 1st ave and 10th street w. has one of those camera radar devices -- got me at 42 in a 30mph = $75 bucks..............Came in the mail yesterday. You have to mail the check to someplace in New York.

You could always just slow down?

At what speed over does it give you a citation for? I am ok with the red light violations, there is some room for error in those and it's just common sense not to go flying through a light that already turned red before you entered the intersection but I think unless you are going 10 mph over which is what most cops will pull you over for it's really just a money grab at that point with these cameras. I'm usually about a 5-7 mph over the limit driver in most speed zones which is usually about the pace of traffic anyways. Most cops won't pull you over for speeding unless you are at least 10mph over the limit.

CR has never stated what the threshold for citation is but I understand it's probably less than 5 over.

Less than 5 seems a little tight. I don't mind the red light cameras but I think the speed ones should be more for catching the excessive speeders (at least 10+ over the limit).

So who here is volunteering to drive through one progressively faster to see what the threshold is?

Looking forward to the day the Metro gets these...:jimlad:

quite a few city employees, politicians, peace officers and other 'important' people have been ticketed. For that reason I side with the cameras, they do not discriminate.

12 over in a 30 mph zone is probably ticket worthy.

I agree though, nothing under 5 should be worth a ticket.

Especially since speedometers aren't always accurate... I haven't verified it but multiple radar signs (the ones that tell you how fast you're going) have told me mine is off. I know other people that have same issue

Fortuantly mine errs on the side of caution, but the point remains that for various reasons your actual speed may vary a little (let alone your foot going up and down a little... like it would in traffic)

On a whole... I'm really not sad that I don't live in Cedar Rapids anymore, and I can't say that given the oppertunity that I'd want to move back at this point

Actually, Des Moines and West Des Moines along 235 is where these are needed the most. 30 - 35 over the speed limit is becoming way too common. I don't have too much of a problem is someone wants to go 10 to 15 over because they aren't really posing a danger to me. It's the idiots that are weaving through traffic trying to go as fast as they can that is going to cause the accidents.

I thought that I saw somewhere that CR set the limit to 5 mph over the speed limit. That should take care of any speedometer or calibration issues.

I believe the quote I saw was that "no tickets had been issued for the 1-5 mph over the limit range". I don't know if that's any different than what you said, but I'll point it out anyway.

I saw in the CR Gazette that since CR has speed cameras in two places along 380 northbound, they have the ability to check how long it takes you to get from camera A to camera B and determine if you were speeding in between and ticket you. They call this a "speed zone" and though the police rep said it would not be in effect at this point in time, I assume that since they have yet another simple option to collect revenue, it will be in effect at somepoint in the near future. They should just skip a few steps and put some electronic limiting devices on all cars to maintain speed limits.

I start commuting to work in CR on Monday. I can tell already I'm gonna hate that town.

FYI - All of the problem with Iowa's gameday and the excessive tickets they have been giving out this year is due to the Marion cops. The U of I brings in surrounding police departments to help with security and the Marion cops take it WAY to serious. Things like on-duty cops ticketing off-duty cops who aren't even drinking.

Yeah, this commute is gonna be awesome.
