It was a good article, with insight into what could be a very special time for a special coach at Iowa State. However, had Keeler written it - people would be ****** that they media is already thinking well "he might be good, but can Iowa State keep him" I believe we can, I also believe with consistent success, we can sell 50,000 Seats at better prices, this will be the key to the long term relationship with Coach, selling more tickets is the key to getting the revenue to keep him here long term - I think it can and will happen

He will jump at the right offer especially if we don't provide a good counteroffer...and let's face it we can't provide a good counteroffer like the big boys can.

We CAN offer what the others do, just in a different way. JP has proven this with the way he has handled the Johnson-Lynch and the Bill Finley situations. Sure, we can't throw millions at our coaches, but we can offer the job security of long-term contracts. If CPR continues to improve and take us to new heights, look for a 10 year (or more) contract offer to keep him around. If Rhoads can be guaranteed his supposed dream job for a decade or two, he's not going to jump ship for a pay raise and a 2 year contract with a tight leash.

This. But if people don't think he will listen to other job offers, I think they are wrong. If he continues to be successful, we won't keep him here for $1 million per year especially if others offer him 2 times that. I think he would stay but we'd have to offer a raise and long term security.

Agreed on this, only an idiot wouldnt at least hear out his other options, and CPR is no idiot.

I don't know why everyone is so sure that CPR will leave the minute someone waves an extra sawbuck under his nose. There are a lot of coaches that like where they are, and are perfectly happy making a mere $1 million a year. :twitcy:

ISU will pay him when the time comes. So well in fact, it'll take an offer from an elite program to pry him away. I can't wait to see where our coach can take this program.

What a difference a day makes. Don't think this would have been a worry just a few days ago. I love CPR but even he knows that we are at the beginning of building a good football program, and I doubt any big boys come calling until we're a more consistent winner. But I'm with the camp that thinks that as long as CPR has success here and the program grows with his success, he's here for the long haul. We can afford to pay him well and he's now home with his family and longtime friends, and imo he's the kind of guy that considers family, friends and loyalty more important than the extra money he could make someplace else.

He won't leave if we can match other salary offers, but we'd be kidding ourselves if we though he wouldn't jump if another school was offering to double or triple his salary. I do think that he'd give ISU the chance to counteroffer, but he's a smart guy, and smart guys don't leave millions of dollars on the table.

We will be able to offer a million to him. Therre aren't a lot of things you can do with 3 million dollars that you can't with one million if you a re a simple living man. You can put your kids through college and you can have a huge retirement savings. If he values ISU like he says he does and we think he do, he won't be leaving.

This is a good chance to play devil's advocate: If someone is into charitable giving, they can give a lot more making $3 million than 1. They can save more, have a little more security in investments, stuff like that.

I'm not going to lead a "CPR is leaving" panic charge or anything, but anyone would listen when a big offer comes their way. Given his relative early success here at ISU, his name will be out there. Maybe not because he chose to have it out there, but we're going to have to deal with the rumors and such for a while.

What about that new big 12 network deal we are supposed to be getting? Wont we be making a lot more money once that goes into effect? Plus if he keeps winning.. ISU will make more and more money..

I agree that it is optimistic to think anyone would stay in a current job for a third or even a half of his or her market value, the only risk I see is that if the fan base doesn't rally around the success and fill the stadium and fill the bank account to pay him in the future - then we should be worried. I think back to when we were ranked 9th and the taste of success was sweet no matter how short - the fans were there. They will come again, just need more consistency in the success - the highs are great the lows will fade as he gets more depth built. the other risk would be we get the wrong end of a major Conference Realignment- but success in football will only help to get us in position to weather that if and when it happens.

Finally - maybe Coach is a Coupon guy too? Us Coupon guys have a way of making our money go farther!

Right on. I think the attendance thing is a real key. We need to show that we're behind what he's building. We do well, especially given our history, but it's really time to step past the "we're OK for what we are" mindset and move towards what we want to become. Otherwise, we may just end up where we've been so many times.

I think CPR is really working to challenge all of those traditional assumptions, like his annual promise that we will one day win the Big 12 Championship. The man says the right things, brings in players, and gets at least one signature win each season against someone that we've traditionally thought we could not compete with.

We've got the right guy. This is when we do what we can, hope for a big booster or whatever provides the $ to lock CPR and staff up, and truck towards that title. But if we want it, it will cost $.
