Keeping up on ISU/IOWA Wrestling

Should have posted this here to start with...

Just got home from the meet, so overall here's my thoughts.

The good: Our fundamentals were sound, nobody got out-techniqued. Also, our guys that were outgunned bigtime put up a hell of a fight. I have nothing but respect for Hunter, James, and Shafer. Those guys fought with heart. Ward pulled out a win after the ref did everything he could to give Lofthouse the match, and other than Drouin we won every match we were supposed to. This ISU team is going to score a lot of points in March.

The bad: We didn't get outwrestled, but we got outhustled. The Iowa guys had much more intensity. This was especially clear when it came to getting escapes from the bottom. Almost none of our wrestlers exploded out and most of them just hung out down there without making a real attempt to get out.

The ugly: Weatherman got broken. He just gave up in the third period and surrendered a major. Weatherman is a huge disappointment this season. I can forgive losing, but giving up is not acceptable. Also, our lineup has some big holes. Where we're bad we're really bad.

Overall I am disappointed with the loss, but not worried about the team other than the holes we already knew about. All of the guys we expect to score points for us in March wrestled good, intense matches with an obvious gameplan put together to win. This makes me feel good about the future with Jackson. He put our wrestlers in the position they needed to win tonight. I think he'll have us peaking at the right time and ready to outperform at NCAAs.

The officiating at 197, Heavy, and 141 was atrocious. Ward overcame it to win in overtime, but at Heavy I still don't know how the ref thought that the Hawk got an escape and then takedown. That match should have gone into overtime at 0-0. At 141 we did everything but pin the guy and never got a score, but right at the end of regulation the Hawk got some questionable control (way less than we'd gotten and not scored with just moments before) and was awarded a takedown. Even if we only win one of those OT matches it still is a much closer score. Win them both and we win the meet.
He rode out the ISU wrestler, then escaped in the 3rd with riding time still in tact, so 2-0, no takedown. Most heavyweight matches are a bore, get used to it.

Who is James? Do you mean Jones? Hunter and Jones did well to keep it to Majors.

Druin got out of position, should have had another takedown before it came to that.

Carr had a ton of heart. Great job.

Weatherman is undersized at this weight. That's it.

Sorenson set a great example of winning. He's due. Great job.

Reader, I feel could have done more. It may not be fair, but he has to get a major. He's better than that.

Shafer shouldn't be out there. I respect him for the effort, but, hey.

Ward, get some shape. You've had tons of time to manage weight. No way the guy should be gassed.

Simonson is a senior. Trained with Jake for years, should be stronger, or smarter. Big match, can't get in those positions.

It's our line-up. We got "out-techniqued" several times. Look forward. We shouldn't be happy, though.

He didn't try a takedown at all! Nothin, natta, notta, and when when Simonson did shoot or try to do anything all he would do is lay on him. Yes, hwt matches are low scoring but there is a difference between action and a guy doing nothing.

You're right, I was getting ahead of myself with the takedown part. What happened was the ref gave the Hawk heavy a very questionable escape during a scramble, and when the scramble ended our guy ended up on top (enough to have kept control, but not enough for a takedown). It should have gone into overtime 0-0.

Did Ballweg, Kerr, Raising and Both Lofthouses shoot a legit shoot? then factor Chiri's first and only shot, that's six of ten wrestlers that did almost nothing offensively. Plus we're throwing two freshmen out to the wolves with zero experience, that said it was winnable duel. I am happy that KJ was disappointed with our fight, and I'm also happy that Iowa was happy with their aggressiveness, but outside of winning the duel I didn't see it. If that was aggressive I'd hate to see passive.

Not really surprising, St. John is going to be a stud and I would bet anything Weatherman will be an AA this year as well.

Looks to me like Weatherman has a long way to go. He's gotten worked a few times this year, not just by St. John. Hope he steps it up soon. I certainly wouldn't bet anything that he will AA this year.

Complain about how Iowa wrestled all you want, but they are actually younger than we are. They started 4 sophs and 3 frosh. We started 6 juniors and seniors.

On top of that, I think they have more studs waiting in the wings than we do. The staff needs to keep plowing ahead in recruiting and development. If they do, we can get back towards the top 2-3 years down the road and perhaps beat Iowa on our way there.
