Ames needs a place like that, no chain steak houses unless I want to go to Ankeny. Steak snobs aside it's decent food, I'm not a big steak guy, but I love me some ribs. I would prefer a Lonestar though, it's probably my favorite of all of them. But until I see something official I'll just assume it's just a rumor, just like that Olive Garden that we were getting.

Seriously? A free steak is a free steak. Their steaks might not be top shelf but they're not bad either so get off your high horse and go get a free meal

get over yourself, i'm not on any high horse. i don't enjoy the food there. Doesn't matter if i pay $50 for a steak or if it's free, if it doesn't taste good then i don't want to eat it. does that make sense to you?

i'm sure i could get a free butt kicking, doesn't mean i want it.

I've heard that they were looking at the land where the bowling alley was on Duff. We'll see. I'm not a big Texas Roadhouse fan. If I want a steak, I'd rather head to the Open Flame in Gilbert. That or grill one on my deck.

I like the chain restaurants, though. They just add choices plus gives you a known quantity. I won't ever pick a chain over my favorites in town (Great Plains, The Spice, Hickory Park, Wallabys), but they're nice for a change up. I still think that an Olive Garden would make money hand over fist in Ames. You'd NEVER get into that place.

Lets just be spoiled little brats and pretend that a widely successful franchise that wants to locate in Ames sucks. It's proven in numerous towns that this restaurant is a favorite by many and is widely successful. I think some of you just want Ames to suck and remain a sub-par town....

The leaders of Ames will find a way to muck it up anyways.

Seriously, this place is an insanely popular restaurant. Obviously not with all the food snobs on this website, but certainly with the general public. I used to hit the one in Cedar Falls when my wife was going to school there, and I have been to the Johnston one several times as well. I've also been to a couple of their locations in Kansas City (certainly not a town hurting for good restaurants). All of seem to be busy all the time. I have been very few places that have a longer wait than TR on a Friday or Saturday night. You don't get that kind of business unless you are doing something right. There is no doubt that this place would just flat out print money in Ames.

Good for Ames to get TRH, but chalk me up as one who can't stand that place. Here are the negatives and postives.

Negatives:
1.Loud - they play Cotton Eyed Joe about every 15 minutes.
2.Wait - Just take a damn reservation instead of this show up in two hours garbage.
3.Service - Once you are seated they try to get you out as soon as possible. Let me eat!
4.Food - Average at best.

Positives:
1. Rolls

Al, what are your thoughts on Texas Roadhouse?

Rhetorical question, but I'll bite:

The food is fine, actually. What I hate are the lines and prices for food that is ok, but not out of this world great. The lines at TR have driven me to outright hatred of the chain. Yes, its good, but there are steak houses all over that are just as good.

Would I eat at a Texas Roadhouse with no wait? Definitely. It's better food than say, Outback.

Have I ever seen a Texas Roadhouse with no wait? Never.

The only restaurant with god awful lines that I've gotten over was Hickory Park, and mostly because you can find certain times when there is no line, and get right in. Plus the food is cheap as hell for what you get. For some reason, people obsess over Texas Roadhouse (much like BWW), and they use that to jack to the prices up and offer less of a value, just because people get so wound up about it. It's a turn off. If that makes me a snob, so be it.

I've gone to Texas Roadhouse for birthdays and other celebrations. My family loves it. We have even made trips to Des Moines just for Texas Roadhouse. Yes, its not the BEST I EVER HAD, but neither is any restaurant in Ames... It's not like Lucullan's is the best Italian ever, or Great Plains is the best pizza ever. Ames needs business, Ames needs competition, and Ames needs something new. Texas Roadhouse will be a great addition to the restaurant scene in Ames, and Central Iowa.

I'm a fan of their prime rib. I don't get a ribeye there or at any restaurant cause there's not many that can beat the one I grill on my deck.

Ames also needs a good bbq place. Similar to Jethro's in Des Moines. Battle's doesn't cut it.

I'm not quite as intensely anti-chain as Al, but this is right on. It's not a criticism of the food, I'm not above eating at an Applebee's depending on the situation, but I refuse to put up with waiting for over an hour in a cattle pen.

I enjoy Texas Roadhouse, but only eat at the place during quiet hours and I never in my life will order a steak from that place again. The sides and finger foods I enjoy.

people obsess about BWW because its awesome Al.

Don't compare Texas Roadhouse to Iowa Beef & Steakhouse ... compare it to Applebees or Chilis, that's more its niche and those places are always busy too.

and I for one think Hickory Park is overrated ... there I said it - thank god there is no negative rep anymore.
