Any restaurant that serves sweet potatoes with marshmellows baked on top of them is horrible in my book. ******* disgusting.

people obsess about BWW because its awesome Al.

Don't compare Texas Roadhouse to Iowa Beef & Steakhouse ... compare it to Applebees or Chilis, that's more its niche and those places are always busy too.

and I for one think Hickory Park is overrated ... there I said it - thank god there is no negative rep anymore.

It seems like Roadhouse has at least double the wait of an Applebee's or Olive Garden type place on a normal night.

Call ahead seating is your friend. You can walk in on the busiest Saturday night and be at a table within 10 or 15 minutes tops.

I've gone to Texas Roadhouse for birthdays and other celebrations. My family loves it. We have even made trips to Des Moines just for Texas Roadhouse. Yes, its not the BEST I EVER HAD, but neither is any restaurant in Ames... It's not like Lucullan's is the best Italian ever, or Great Plains is the best pizza ever. Ames needs business, Ames needs competition, and Ames needs something new. Texas Roadhouse will be a great addition to the restaurant scene in Ames, and Central Iowa.

Blasphemy. I actually think that it IS the best pizza ever.

I don't eat at Texas Roadhouse often because it's not close so I don't know if they have it, but when we go to Outback we just call ahead and are sat usually within 10 minutes of getting there.

I think it's good overall to have these types of places move into Ames a little more. More food options will make for nicer trips for me(selfish). My family, who live in Mason City, and my wife's family, who live in Algona, make several trips to ISU events to meet us when we come from Omaha. We have been forced on several occasions to go eat in DSM due to the total **** show in all Ames restaurants following anything ISU.

I agree though, I wouldn't pick one of these over Wallaby's or the like but it provide for more options. And I agree, an Olive Garden would slay in Ames, how has no one figured that out yet?

P.S. Battle's absolutely does cut it for barbeque, at least for what passes as BBQ in ames, ia. At least the last time I was there it did.

Hickory Parks blows, clones_jer, you're not the only one!

HP IS overrated, but with how cheap it is, and the generally good service, its hard to complain.

BWW love makes more sense because you don't see a lot of wing-specializing sports bars. It offers a unique product. TR, not so much. There are steak houses everywhere. Hell, most of us probably cook a better steak on our own grills (I don't generally eat steak at restaurants, period).

Other chains ARE busy, no doubt, but often times you can still get a seat very quickly. Texas Roadhouse isn't that way in my experience (just Cedar Falls and Johnston locations).

It's a good thing for Ames though. More business = good. People eat this **** up (literally and figuratively) so it certainly can't hurt anything.

For a good bbq turkey sandwich Battle's is good, but for brisket or pulled pork not so much.

the theme here is that Al hates over-priced places ... yet you still don't like Taco Bell - you can feed a family of 8 for a month with a $20 bill at that place.

My favorite places in Ames are definately Dublin Bay & Great Plaines - now that I only get back for football games those are the only ones I've been to in a few years.

But Hickory Park has been over-rated for a long time ... for some reason it reminds me of Bonanza. It is cheap though, I'll give you that. And as a larger individual they do have an excellent selection of ice cream.

TRH isn't someplace I go often but when I do I get burgers or pulled pork. It's delicious the sides are awesome, the buns are awesome, I love peanuts and I'm a country go so I like the atmosphere. Maybe I have poor taste in food, if I do, quite frankly I don't give a ****. If you don't like it don't go and let us that do like it go. Variety and options never hurts.

sorry, but that is like saying McDonalds has a great burger.

Texas Roadhouse is not good. Why do people get so excited for the chain restaurants? 98% of them are not very good.

98% is a very high figure. Which one chain do you like?

P.S. Mickey D fish sandwiches are better than their burgers (not saying much).

Variety and options never hurts.

Agreed.

I think ames has been hurt by its govt fighting a lot of these options over the years. Yeah, once youve lived there long enough you know some of the local establishments, but for someone coming into town, maybe on a campus visit or for other business, it creates a really bad first impression when there are very few of these known-quantity options available. Creates the potential for people to think 'wow, this place is so middle of nowhere it has jack for national chains'.

And even then, while there are some good local options, its not like most of them are out of this world stellar either.

I am with you on all of these places. HP is definitely good enough for the money. It's not great but it's just as good as Applebees or something and costs less. BWW isn't my favorite but it's a cool atmosphere. As far as TR-If I have to go to a chain steakhouse, that's the one. I despise Outback since I have to of the worst steaks I have ever had there and their burgers suck too. The only thing they have there that has been good are the chili cheese fries and blooming onion. The few times I have been to TR it has actually been pretty good.

i agree, the rolls and cinnamon butter is great. the rest of the food is sub par at best. i feel like a food snob now. yesterday i blasted Applebees and now Texas Roadhouse. I even have a $50 giftcard for the Texas Roadhouse here in Des Moines and i'll never use it.

Great post. All of the food at TR is just meh. Cafe Shi has the best steak in Ames, and this won't change that.

Hickory Park is overrated but it's cheap and you definitely get a lot of food for your money there. It also has a wide variety on it's menu. One thing I liked about HP is that it is so over hyped and popular that it would draw people there and away from other places I liked to go, making it easier to get in those other places.

Texas Roadhouse is definitely better than Outback and Lone Star. If I still lived in Ames and was given a choice of the three to come there, i'd take TR all the way.

Jethros > Battles. Meat and sauce are both better at Jethros...but Battles isn't bad either. It's just tough to compare it to Jethros
