A long hard road out of hell
Marilyn manson's bio, just sHollytarted reading it and is crazy so far

I assume you've read Motley Crue's bio, "Dirt". Parts of that made me blush.

If you like more trashy biographies, Dog the Bounty Hunter's is pretty fascinating. Dude has like 13 kids with 4 or 5 women. He's a reformed Christian man, but he's fallen off the wagon more than a few times. He's had many many "adventures".

Also, Laura Hillenbrand's "Unbroken" about an American WWII POW who also happened to be an Olympic long distance runner.

Am reading "The Dark Tower" series by Stephen King right now, a blend of sci. fi. & fantasy. Going to be made in to a movie soon starring Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men). Have to admit I'm very surprised by King's writing as I thought he was totally a horror genre kind of guy.

Couldn't stand the Dark Tower series.

I haven't read Dirt, I was going to but I am not a big Motley Crue fan. He wrote another one, but can't remember what it was called. He also wrote one on Jenna Jameson.

Since you're into sci-fi, I recommend the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. Cool science and interesting looks at philosophy and politics.

If you haven't checked out Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead, then they are a must for any sci-fi reader.

If you liked hunger games, have you read the Dark Materials Collection? First book was the Golden Compass (movie sucked), 2nd book is the Subtle Knife and was awesome. One of the top 3 book series ive ever read.

I'll second this series as well, really enjoyed it. It's popular on banned book lists due to perceived anti-religion themes, so it has that going for it as well

I was turned on to Ken Follett by CF's last book discussion. The Pillars of the Earth was very good -- followed by World Without End. Those 2 alone will slow your reading down... very long books. I haven't read his other -- Fall of Giants, but plan to.

Some of my favorite Hard Science fiction/ Science fiction

Protector - Larry Niven
Ringworld - Larry Niven

A Fire Upon the Deep - Vernor Vinge
Red Mars - Kim Stanley Robinson
Starship Troopers - Robert A. Heinlein
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - Phillip K. ****
Foundation - Isaac Asimov
Dune - Frank Herbert

Those are very good.

I'd also add Neuromancer - an old cyberpunk book that's pretty good.

If you're a SciFi fan, read the complete hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series, hilarious and very entertaining. Michio Kaku or Brian Greene are also a great authors if you don't mind thinking about actual science. ANYTHING by Chuck Klosterman is great, but he's more pop culture.

The Long Walk is a great book by S. Rawicz. It is about a Polish prisoner of war in Siberia. He and some others plan an escape and pull it off. The head east through the rest of Siberia, into Asia, across the Gobi Desert, through the Himalaya mountains. Just an incredible story and journey based on a true story.

IMO, anything by Stephen King

Also, I really liked Daemon by Daniel Suarez. The sequel to that is out now...Freedom. Have not read it yet.

Right now I am reading Zero History by William Gibson. But, like with so many sci-fi writers, this is a continued series......you really need to read Pattern Recognition and then Spook Country by Gibson first.

Actually the entire Foundation series is excellent. Books one, three, and four (Dune, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune) of the Dune series are excellent as well. The second book, Dune Messiah is rather boring, but it bridges Dune and Children of Dune. Most any book by Heinlein is a great read. I also like Jack Vance, but be prepared for some vocabulary challenges in reading his books; the Demons series is great. Philip Jose Farmer is another SF/Fantasy author I recommend; his World of Tiers series is outstanding. Hope this helps.

If you like pop culture and basketball then it's hard to top Bill Simmons' The Book of Basketball.
If you're looking for a good novel, maybe try Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff by Christopher Moore. The probelm with Moore is that if you've read one of his books, you've pretty much read them all. Lamb just happens to be the very best of the bunch.

Douglas Adams. Best ever sci-fi -- or at least sci-fi/comedy. Can't believe it took 90 posts for this to come up.

Fantasy -- "The Wheel of Time" series. The first -- what 11? books were written by Robert Jordan. I made the mistake of reading the series before it was completed (a friend told me about it but forgot to mention that it wasn't completed). Spent weeks trying to find the next book in the series before I figured out that it wasn't written yet. That was about 15 years ago.

Robert Jordan died before finishing the series (cardiac amyloidosis). He told a team of people (chiefly Brandon Sanderson) what his ending/vision for the series was, and then Brandon Sanderson finished it -- in a 3 book series. The absolute final book (supposedly) is set to be released most likely near the end of this year.

Oh -- each of the books is around 750 pages.

Also fantasy -- The Mallorean (5 book series) and The Belgariad (5 book series sequel) by David Eddings.

One of the most amazing books I've ever read:

hillenbrand-unbroken_211-thumb-211x320-56964.jpg

It's about a troubled kid that ends up becoming a WWII bombardier, and has unbelievable things happen to him...surviving it all.

Oh yeah.. everyone should read that book. I can't believe more people aren't talking about that. If that wasn't a true story, I would have said it was a ridiculous story because no one's life would be that interesting. I couldn't stop talking about him for a week after reading that. Everyone should check that out. One ridiculous story after another.
