What are Some Good Books to Read?

On the unbelievable/hilarious scale (especially for twenty somethings) the Tucker Max books are OUT OF THIS WORLD. All I will say is they are SUPPOSED to be true accounts of ONE man's exploits (sexual and otherwise). If he truly did all of those things by the time he was thirty he has achieved demi-god status amongst single 'playas".

I suppose that as long as this list has gotten, I should throw in my 2 cents worth as well.

Some of my favorites are :

  • Star Wars Books. Just so many out there.
  • The Hunger Games Series. Wow. Really gripping story.
  • Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy.
  • Doom Star Series by Vaughn Heppner. Cheap good sci-fi on the kindle.
  • Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Free
  • Les Mis. Get the unabridged edition and read it. Now. It is great.
  • Enders Game. Probably my favorite book.
  • The rest of the books in the Enders Game Universe. Yes, they change a lot of what you thought you knew, but for the most part, the change is for the better. Especially all the books with Bean as the main character.
  • 1984 , Animal Farm, Brave New World.
  • Night. Read this one in high school. Not necessarily the best for reading for fun, but very deep.
  • Old Man and the Sea
  • Lord of the Flies
  • The Jungle. Really interesting read.
  • Tom Clancy Books. Especially the ones from before he started 'co-writing' books.
  • Timothy Zahn. Especially his Conqueror's Trilogy.
  • Most books that have won a Nebula award usually tend to be pretty good.

Honestly, I'm sure that there are a lot of good books I'm forgetting. I'll try to come back and add them to the thread as I remember them.

Started reading Hyperion last night. It was good enough that I read until about 2 this morning, knowing that I had to wake up at 6.

Agreed! In fact, I don't think I've found anything by him that I didn't really really like. Those two are just my personal favorites.

I dunno why, but naming the murderer's group The Jacks of All Trades was an awesome touch.

Has anyone here read Atlas Shrugged? I've heard from multiple friends/co-workers it is the best book they've read.

Started reading Hyperion last night. It was good enough that I read until about 2 this morning, knowing that I had to wake up at 6.

Glad you're enjoying it early on. It's been about 3-4 years since I read all four books in the series, but my recollection is that the Endymion books (the last two in the series) were more compelling page turners for me. That said, the two Hyperion books were great, I think they just had a different style to them. They set up some of the background for the last two books.

Overall just an awesome series. Like CycloneErik, I may have to re-read it again soon myself.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the first book of the Hunger Games series, and I can't put it down. It's awesome. The idea is that you have a dictator/communist government (The Capitol), and 12 districts (each with it's own primary resources to deliver to the country) and the Capitol forces each district to select one boy and one girl to compete to the death (Highlander style, there can only be one winner) in order to show the districts that they are subservient to the ruling party.

I probably made this book way too political, but it is awesome.

McSorley's Wonderful Saloon - Joseph Mitchell

Joseph Mitchell was a writer for The New Yorker Magazine for many years. This book is a collection of short stories or "portraits" of some of the characters he crossed paths with during his time with the magazine.
